Quality Control

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Aristotle

In this chapter we will set our sights on tools for quality control in managing projects:

  • Quality Improvement Map
  • Pareto Chart
  • Cause and Effect Diagram
  • Control Charts

These tools are designed for monitoring specific results of project implementation (see Figure 14.1). They are deployed to ensure that the project quality program happens in line with the project specification that is defined with the customer. The proper use of the tools will help you review the project work results, accepting the good ones and using the others to make corrections, adjust project processes, and work continuously to improve the desired quality outcomes of the project. To reach the outcomes, quality control will inevitably require a close coordination with scope, schedule, cost, risk, and other controls. The goal of this chapter is to help practicing and prospective project managers

  • Learn how to use various quality control tools
  • Select quality control tools that are appropriate for their project situation
  • Customize the tools of their choice

These skills are vitally important in implementing a project and building a standardized PM process.
