High quality MIDI files can help streamline your various music production efforts – be it creating covers of popular songs or incorporating virtual instruments in your own songs. They can even be great for karaoke!

Not every producer or musician uses MIDI files or is even aware that they can. But yes, there are sites out there that are home to plenty of professional MIDI files.

In this guide, we review and compare six of the best professional MIDI file sites.

Song Galaxy

Song GalaxySong Galaxy

First up is Song Galaxy. As with most MIDI file sites, it’s got a bit of an outdated look, though it’s honestly one of the better ones.

You will find that most MIDI sites have been around quite a while, and because that is the case, they don’t necessarily have cutting edge designs.

Anyway, on Galaxy’s homepage, you will see their latest updates, song entries, top 10 downloads, MIDIs that are in production, and more.

Overview

Song Galaxy is home to MIDI files, Your Mix audio files (MP3 versions of their MIDI catalog), backing tracks, multi tracks (basically customizable versions of backing tracks), re-arranger files (that allow you to rearrange a song), and software (MP3 Key Changer Version 2, Midi Eddie, Audio Eddie Pro, Multi Tracker, and Karaoke Eddie).

Our focus in this guide is of course MIDI files, but Song Galaxy’s other offerings could prove just as useful and are basically interconnected to their MIDI offerings. Their software, for instance, allows you to make further edits to your MIDI files.

Overall, Song Galaxy is basically a searchable eCommerce site, so if there are specific songs you’re looking for, and you want to be able to find them fast, you’ll enjoy taking advantage of Song Galaxy.

Although the site is in English, it appears as though English isn’t exactly their strong suit. Typos aren’t hard to come by.

Pricing

At Song Galaxy, every MIDI file costs £4.16, and £2.00 extra for premium keyboard formats.

That works out to about $5.62 and $2.70 USD, depending on when you’re converting, of course.

Registered customer discounts are available. This appears to be based on your wallet balance. Here’s an overview of how that all works out.

  • At level 1, with a balance of £25 ($33.74), you get a 10% discount.
  • At level 2, with a balance of £50 ($67.49), you get a 15% discount.
  • At level 3, with a balance of £75 ($101.23), you get a 17% discount.
  • At level 4, with a balance of £100 ($134.98), you get a 20% discount.
  • At level 5, with a balance of £200 ($269.96), you get a 25% discount.

What Makes Song Galaxy Unique

At Song Galaxy, files are organized by recommendations, genre, decade, alphabetical, and more. Not to mention, they’ve also got a search bar. So, whatever you’re looking for, you should be able to find it.

It is possible to preview every MIDI file before purchase, so you aren’t left wondering whether you’re getting a high-quality MIDI file until you’ve spent your $5.

We’ve had a listen to numerous MIDI files on Galaxy, and we found all of them to be high quality. Be it Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” or Eddie Money’s “Take Me Home Tonight,” some of the sounds are almost authentic to the original tunes and would be highly usable as karaoke tracks.

While scanning their library, in addition to previewing tracks, you can also download, learn more about, or purchase each track.

Overall, the site is easy to use and is nicely laid out. It also loads fast, so you shouldn’t experience any issues finding what you’re looking for.

Also, of note – Song Galaxy has their own free multi tracker iPad app.

What We Like About Song Galaxy

Here’s a summary of how we felt about Song Galaxy:

  • The site is nicely laid out and easy to use.
  • You can easily find what you’re looking for using the various search and category functions.
  • The ability to preview tracks instantly tells you whether the MIDI is high quality (quality does vary).
  • Some songs have multiple MIDI interpretations. You can easily choose your favorite.

What Could Be Better

Here’s what we thought could be better:

  • Some genres, artists, or bands are a little underrepresented in their library.

CYBERMIDI

CYBERMIDICYBERMIDI

Ready for CYBERMIDI? It’s a good thing looks aren’t everything, because this is a site that looks like it’s straight out of the mid-2000s. The question is whether it’s got top quality midi files, right? That’s what we’re going to be looking at here.

Overview

CYBERMIDI has provided MIDI files on the web for 18 years. To that extent, you could say that they are a trustworthy source.

Their homepage is well organized, but wow – there’s just so much stuff!

In addition to MIDI files, they’ve got sheet music, a MIDI controller store, blog, and more. They also have a newsletter and are actively soliciting members.

From their homepage, you can also search MIDI by categories, browse through their latest additions, top 10 downloads, and more.

We couldn’t possibly cover everything you can find on their site, but we think you get the idea. There’s a lot available at CYBERMIDI.

Pricing

Each MIDI file costs $7.50. But if you become a CYBERMIDI member, you can access files for free.

Membership plans are as follows:

  • Gold – $49.99 annually
  • Silver – $29.99 semi-annually
  • Platinum – $79.99 for two years

What Makes CYBERMIDI Unique

Browsing for files on CYBERMIDI couldn’t get much easier. You can use their convenient search bar, or search by genre, style, and era. If you’re looking for more, you can also check top 10 downloads and the latest additions to the site. They even have a featured artists list.

Files are easy to add to your cart, and you can also preview them using the “listen” button. For reasons we’ll address a little later, this functionality could be better.

But when you click on the “listen” button, a small window pops up giving you more information on the song – title, artist, genre, style, catalog #, writers, price, rating, and even files purchased by customers who also bought the file you’re previewing.

Nice functionality – it’s just a little old school and is severely in need of updating.

What We Like About CYBERMIDI

Here’s what we like most about CYBERMIDI:

  • Large, searchable database of files.
  • Both the website and the shopping cart load fast.
  • They do their best to provide you with additional info on MIDI files and help you find what you’re looking for.

What Could Be Better

Here’s what we thought could be better:

  • Previewing MIDI files requires Flash. By now, Flash is quite outdated and even Adobe doesn’t support it anymore. CYBERMIDI needs to update their preview function.
  • Cluttered website with unclear design.
  • Some popular artists and bands are severely underrepresented.

BitMidi

BitMidiBitMidi

Now we’re going to look at BitMidi, whose site has got kind of a playful vibe.

Popular MIDIs are highlighted towards the top of their homepage, and you will find the likes of Super Mario 64, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, and other favorites just waiting to be downloaded.

Overview

If you go to BitMidi, you will be greeted by a rather sparse looking website, with no sign of a menu in place. They have a search bar at the top, so we assume they recommend searching for what you’re looking for.

There is a “Random MIDI” button that will take you to a random MIDI file and show you related MIDI files.

Our overall impression of BitMidi is that they primarily cater to TV, film, and video game soundtracks, though they do have songs by various artists and bands as well.

On the homepage, you can also scan through popular MIDIs or explore page by page, but we can’t see this being practical for the most part.

Use the search bar!

Pricing

MIDI files are free to download on BitMidi.

What Makes BitMidi Unique

BitMidi invites you to take advantage of their search function. Assuming you know exactly what you’re looking for, this comes in handy.

On each MIDI file page, you’ll be able to preview and download MIDIs. They also display related MIDI files on the same page, which can help with navigation.

Ads can sometimes get in the way of your navigation, but this is probably the main way BitMidi monetizes their website, so of course their goal would be to make their ads as clickable as possible.

There isn’t much more to say about BitMidi because their site is quite basic. It’s also relatively easy to use though.

What We Like About BitMidi

Here’s what we liked most about BitMidi:

  • MIDI files are free.
  • They’ve got a large catalog of MIDI files.
  • The site loads fast, and the interface is easy to use.

What Could Be Better

Here’s what we thought could be better:

  • If you forget to pause the audio you’re previewing, it will keep playing even as you’re moving from page to page.
  • There are high quality MIDI files on BitMidi, but overall quality varies quite a bit. Preview the MIDIs you’re thinking about downloading for best results!
  • They should make MIDi files searchable by category.

Midifiles.com

Midifiles.comMidifiles.com

Midifiles.com is next up on our list. This site has clearly been set up as a searchable database.

Upon visiting their homepage, you will find a search bar, some content that explains MIDI files, as well as how they can be used, and links to MIDI files organized by alphanumeric values.

Overview

Midifiles.com is mainly in service of those in need of karaoke backing tracks. That said, depending on what you’re looking for, these could end up being solid options for other purposes. After all, you’ve probably heard more than a few karaoke backing tracks that were high quality.

Their site is more “content heavy” than others we’ve looked at so far, with a lot of detailed information on each MIDI file. We think this is mostly to the user’s benefit, but we’ll talk more about that later.

Midifiles.com has a free MIDI demo pack, and if you’re just getting started with their site, this would be the best place to start. I, however, was unable to access this download. It never arrived in my inbox.

In summary, Midifiles.com is a searchable eCommerce site with basic organization.

Pricing

Every file costs 12,99 € or roughly $15.91 USD.

What Makes Midifiles.com Unique

We haven’t seen any MIDI site that offers this much detail on each MIDI file. Midifiles.com tells you who the artist is, what format the song is in (generally MIDI but they also have instrumental MP3s), the tempo of the song, the tracks and instruments, the cost of the track, and sometimes additional descriptive text relating to the track.

This is quite handy and can even give you a better idea of whether the MIDI file is worth downloading.

Each track has a preview button too, of course, but it isn’t entirely obvious, and could be better highlighted.

As with every site, there are both better and lesser quality MIDI files on Midifiles.com. It’s a bit of a downside, then, that they each cost about the same amount.

What We Like About Midifiles.com

This is what we liked most about Midifiles.com:

  • Detailed documentation on each MIDI file.
  • Easy to search database of 50,000+ titles.
  • The site supports multiple languages.

What Could Be Better

Here’s what we thought could be better:

  • The site interface seems slightly broken with elements not aligning correctly.
  • Sometimes the content is a little heavy and/or could be better organized.
  • Free MIDI demo pack should be more obvious and easier to find. Also couldn’t download it.
  • Preview button needs to be more clearly marked.

MIDIWORLD.COM

MIDIWORLD.COMMIDIWORLD.COM

MIDIWORLD.COM is another MIDI website with a bit of an old school vibe.

Their navigation consists of Main (their homepage), Basics (a page all about the basics of MIDI), FAQ, Files, MIDI Forum, and Forum.

There’s also a small search bar on the right side, as well as MIDI organized by genre. Top artists/composers section is also available, but this seems to refer to the top contributors of the site.

Overview

MIDIWORLD.COM is a simplistic, fast loading website. You can easily use it to find MIDI files of your choosing, especially using the search function.

Their Files section kind of looks like a cluttered mess (because of the tag cloud), but files are searchable via alphabetical and genre categories, which comes in handy.

From popular songs by your favorite artists and bands to novelty, video game, and film music, MUSICWORLD.COM seems to have a bit of everything for the MIDI file enthusiast.

Pricing

MIDI files are free to download at MUSICWORLD.COM.

What Makes MIDIWORLD.COM Unique

MIDIWORLD.COM is basically just a searchable database of MIDI files. But if you were expecting more, you probably won’t find it here.

There’s no documentation for the tracks and no preview button either. You’ll need to download and have a listen for yourself.

If there’s something you can’t find elsewhere, then this site is worth keeping on your list though.

What We Like About MIDIWORLD.COM

Here’s what we like most about MIDIWORLD.COM:

  • MIDI files are free to download.
  • Has some files you won’t find elsewhere.
  • Easy to use search function. Loads fast.

What Could Be Better

Here’s what we thought could be better:

  • We feel like we’ve seen many of the same MIDI files elsewhere.
  • No documentation on MIDI files.
  • No previews. The ability to listen to MIDI files before downloading them is quite important in our opinion.

Free Midi

Free MidiFree Midi

Free Midi is the final entry on this list. And wouldn’t you know it, their site has got a simple, outdated look to it. Not to mention – ads.

That’s okay, because we’re going to look at it anyway, and let you know what we think about it. Let’s get into it.

Overview

Free Midi seems to be focused exclusively on MIDI, and this is reflected in their menu and site design. The menu allows you to hunt through their catalog, with links to all, new, top, requests, and genre.

Under “all,” you can scan artists, songs, random MIDI files, TV themes, movie themes, video games, seasonal, and national anthem.

They even have a search bar.

So, of all the sites we’ve seen, we feel this is the most searchable of all.

Pricing

MIDI files are free on Free Midi.

What Makes Free Midi Unique

The entire site has been designed to help you find MIDI files, so there isn’t much thinking involved. You can easily dive right in by running a search or by browsing through categories.

The download pages are simple. But they give you the ability to download both MIDI and MP3 versions of the files. They also give you information on the artist, song, and genre. Links to other songs by the same artist are also included.

It might be a little different on your end, but we couldn’t get the preview button to work, and that’s a shame. The site would be a lot better if this worked.

What We Like About Free Midi

Here’s what we liked most about Free Midi:

  • The most searchable website of any on this list.
  • Quite possibly the most extensive catalog of MIDI files of any site covered here. Impressive!

What Could Be Better

Here’s what we thought could be better:

  • Ads pop up as you’re navigating to different pages. A little annoying.
  • We couldn’t always get the preview function to work, sadly.
  • Though they have a big catalog, the quality of files varies.

Other Pro Midi File Sites

While the above are all great resources, sometimes you either can’t find what you’re looking for, or just want more variety. If that’s the case, you may want to check out these other sites.

Hit Trax Midi Files

Hit Trax Midi FilesHit Trax Midi Files

Hit Trax Midi Files has over 22,000 fully produced MIDI files that ‘load and play’ in all GM MIDI devices and DAW’s. They give a 40% discount on all purchases of 3 or more titles, so if you’re looking to buy bulk you may want to check them out. I’ve spoken to their team and they also create custom MIDI files, so if you want something specific, maybe contact them and see if they can do it.

Top Sites For Professional High Quality Midi Files, The Verdict

MIDI files aren’t subjected to rigorous standardization and they are generally user generated.

They are more valuable to some than others. Every library is a little different in terms of size and what’s available. A MIDI file’s value can vary greatly, from free to over $16 per track. Their quality can also vary. They are often used for karaoke, but producers and musicians have other uses for them, too.

So, our main suggestion would be to get clear on what you’re looking for. Make sure you know how you’re planning to use the MIDI files. Then, begin your search. Listen to different versions of the same song, across different libraries. Even if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, what you do find could serve as a solid starting point.

We’ve covered a mix of MIDI sites here, though if we had to give it up to just one, we think Song Galaxy offers the best value overall.

We hope you found what you’re looking for. Have fun!
