Manchester United flop Alexander Buttner has had a rollercoaster of a career since leaving Old Trafford back in 2014.

The Dutch left-back was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson and lifted the Premier League title during his time there.

But he barely made it into the first-team side, and played just 13 times in the league during his two years at United, finding the net on two occasions in the league and playing just twice in other competitions.

Despite playing a support role in United’s most recent league title success in 2013, he was allowed to leave for Dynamo Moscow just a year later for just £4.4million.

But his time in Russia wasn’t any more successful, despite making 19 appearances in his first league campaign.

He played 31 times in all competitions in his first season at Moscow, but was shipped out to Anderlecht on loan the following year. He struggled out there, too, and played just 16 times in all competitions before returning to Moscow.

From there, Buttner’s career started to go into obscurity, as he made just four more appearances for Moscow before leaving for good.

Alexander Buttner failed to find his feet at New England Revolution

He stayed for half a season before leaving in the January transfer window of 2017, signing for Vitesse after Anderlecht declined the opportunity to sign him permanently.

He enjoyed limited success at Vitesse, spending three seasons at the Eredivisie club and playing 56 times in all competitions.

But when time came for his contract to be extended, Vitesse opted against keeping him at the club and allowed him to leave on free.

He decided to head to America and sign for Major League Soccer side New England Revolution, where he played 13 times for the Foxboro-based side.

However, his contract was terminated last week, allowing him to sign a 16-month contract with Cypriat side Apollon Limassol FC.

Buttner, 31, is now at his fifth club of his career, and will be hoping his time in Cyprus can give his career a new lease of life.
