Alexander Wang on Zoë Kravitz’s Wedding Dress and Why He’d “Never Say Never” to a Bridal Collection
By now everyone has gotten a glimpse of Zoë Kravitz’s wedding to Karl Glusman. Yesterday, after much secrecy surrounding their summertime nuptials in Paris, the Big Little Lies star shared a series of black-and-white photographs of the event, including several that showcased her custom Alexander Wang wedding dress.

Kravitz, whose wedding weekend fashion first made headlines when she was captured by paparazzi in a design by the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Danielle Frankel, chose a Wang design that was more demure than people might expect from the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet. The sleeveless, drop-waist ballerina skirt number was made with organza and micro seed pearls. As Wang explains of working with one of his oldest and best friends, “Zoë was very clear on her vision: something pure, elegant, timeless but with depth.” He adds, “She knew the reference she wanted and that was Audrey Hepburn. But we didn’t want it to feel vintage or too costumey.”
In order to achieve a balance between modern and classic, Wang says that the first thing he suggested they do was keep everything consistent with one texture. “Then I knew I wanted to reinterpret the silhouette and volume,” he notes. “Usually I tend to deconstruct or juxtapose extremes in order to reach a new context of familiarity, but this time it felt more surgical, and everything was handled in a much more precious way.”
Wang worked on the dress for about a year at his New York atelier, and he did around five fittings with Kravitz. “I wanted it to be perfect, and each piece was made separately and fitted individually before we put it together,” he says. The dress was draped with five layers of bias organza (not as “frilly” as tulle) to give it some translucence in the light. The final touches were an edged neckline and armholes embellished with delicate pearls, so that, “Zoë didn’t feel that she would have to wear too much jewelry on her neck or arms.” Instead of a veil, which Wang and Kravitz went back and forth on, they decided on a micro bow headband.
