Alexander Wolfe releases new track ‘Catherine’ on March 22nd through Dharma Records — Longevity
Speaking about the track Wolfe explains, “I wrote Catherine a few days after breaking up with my ex. I wanted to tell the story of our relationship from meeting in a bar in Edinburgh to sleeping together, falling in love, growing apart, our last kiss. and the intrinsic link between pain and love. For a while I was a bit uncomfortable with how raw it was, I thought about softening it and changing names, taking the sex out, but in the end I decided to keep it as it was, back then in the eye of the storm when the feelings were fresh. Listening back to it now it feels pretty brutal and exposed, you can hear the defeat in my voice. There’s not much use of poetic license in there, it’s all pretty much as it happened. I’ve always loved those bruised romantic records… Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen etc, I suppose this is my version of that.
It’s quite a heavy listen and it’s 6 minutes long. The original had 8 verses and was 13 minutes long so you can count yourself lucky.”
Alexander Wolfe is also a prolific writer for film and screen. He’s been rather busy of late. He wrote a song for the film Beast, which just won a BAFTA and he also wrote all the music for new TV series Flack starring Anna Paquin, which launched at the end of Feb.
Wolfe took a short hiatus at the end of 2018 where he again performed the music for the critically acclaimed theatre piece ‘The Trench’ – a dark otherworldly fantasy set in the World War One trenches’- by theatre company Les Enfants Terribles, of which Wolfe was nominated for an Off West End award for the soundtrack which he also wrote. On it’s original release ‘The Trench’ took Edinburgh Festival by storm and then toured the UK a couple of years ago, before returning in October and November 2018 for a sold-out six-week run at the Southwark Playhouse.
‘Catherine’ is a taster of what’s to come from Alexander Wolfe’s new album ‘Little Death’. Having released preview singles ‘Your Love Is A Wheel’, ‘Breaking The Fall’, ‘Oslo’ and ‘I Can’t Get To Sleep’ over the course of the last 18 months, he’s picked support by way of Lauren Laverne and 6 Music Recommends, Radio X, Indie Shuffle, CLASH, The Line of Best Fit, Mahogany Blog, Record of the Day and All Things Go to name a few. ‘Little Death’ is a beautiful body of work that showcases Wolfe’s immense talent.
