What is aniline leather?

Aniline leather is a type of leather that is dyed using soluble dyes which penetrate the leather to showcase the natural texture and markings of the hide. This achieves the desired color of the leather while still retaining all the natural characteristics of the hide.

Because any texture on the surface is still visible, only high-quality leather is suitable for aniline finishing.

However, because aniline leather is not coated, it is more susceptible to staining, fading, and scratches. It is not recommended for high-traffic areas or homes with children or pets.

On the flip side, the lack of coating makes aniline leather soft and more comfortable to sit on.

What is semi-aniline leather?

Semi-aniline leather is made with semi-aniline dye that is slightly pigmented. As it’s coated with a light protective layer, the natural grain and pores of the leather are less visible. This extra layer gives semi-aniline leather a uniform color and enhances its durability.

But, when compared to aniline leather, semi-aniline leather is not as soft and luxurious.

Semi-aniline finishes are often used on top grain leather instead of full grain leather as the latter can restrict the development of patina.

What is pigmented leather?
