NEW HAIR SALON OPENS IN COUNTY

GLOUCESTER – Tammy Bolden Harris, a Gloucester native, has opened Tammy’s Unique Hair Boutique – Part II on Woodsville Road, Route 1306, off Route 17 at Ordinary.

Harris has been operating a similar business on Kirby Street in West Point for three years. Prior to that, she worked at several salons in Newport News.

The new salon, formerly Hair Jammers, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and every other Friday and Saturday. It offers hair cutting and styling for men, women and children, specializing in weaving and finger waves, with master cuts by D. J. Nasty. A nail technician will be added to the staff next month.

CENTER FOR ARTS RECEIVES GRANT

KILMARNOCK – The Center for the Arts in Kilmarnock has received a $1,200 grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts under its General Operating Support program.

General operating support provides financial assistance to arts organizations for on-going artistic and administrative expenses.

The program is designed to continue, strengthen and expand the programs of organizations of artistic merit.

* LaVonne Joyce, who has served as director of the Riveside Wellness and Fitness Center at Gloucester since January 1922, has accepted the position of director of the Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center – Briarwood in Richmond.

Joyce began her association with Riverside in 1987 as as aerobics instructor at the Fit Shop at Gloucester Point. She later served as fitness coordinator and then aquatics director before becoming director of the center at Gloucester.

With Debbie Foreman, she developed the seniors program at the center, known as the Busy Body Company, one of the largest senior programs in the United States.

* Gloria Coker, of Newport News, will be the featured artist for July at The Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown. Coker paints watercolor portraits of people in action. The museum is located at 309 Water St., Yorktown. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. All proceeds from the gift shop go to the museum.
