Balenciaga Releases the “T-Shirt Shirt” for $1,290 | Teen Vogue
Summer is a confusing time — you dress for the weather in minimal clothing, then practically freeze to death when you go anywhere with the A/C on full blast. You could carry around a sweater at all times, but for those who’d prefer to keep their hands free, Balenciaga has a solution: a short-sleeve T-shirt with a long-sleeve button-down sewn to the front. This ingenious and definitely not ridiculous item will set you back a cool $1,290 — a bargain since, after all, you’re getting two shirts for the (very expensive) price of one.
According to the Balenciaga site, the “T-Shirt Shirt” has “two wearing options.” You can either wear the T-shirt and let the long sleeves drape in front of you like a pair of tentacles, or wear the button-down and let the short sleeves flow behind you like two tiny, flapping wings. The shirt, which is currently available for preorder and will ship at the end of July, only comes in one color combo so far: a bright blue tee with an indigo-checkered dress shirt.
And if you need a slightly more formal option, have $200 more to spend, and want an even more confusing shirt(s), look no further than Balenciaga’s $1,490 “Double Shirt,” which features the long-sleeve button-down sewn to the front of another short-sleeve button-down. This lewk comes in a somewhat more blinding color combo, with dark blue stripes layered on top of light blue stripes. Additionally, the “Double Shirt” allows each of the shirts to drape even more dramatically, since they’re attached at their collars and buttons, leaving the sleeves and sides of the shirts free to wave in the wind.
The Internet, understandably, was confused. One Twitter user astutely pointed out that you’ve probably made the “T-Shirt Shirt” yourself, for $1,290 less than retail price, by holding up a shirt in front of you in the mirror to see how it would look without actually trying it on. Another intrepid tweeter made the garment himself — again, for exactly $1,290 off Balenciaga’s price — by attaching two shirts they already owned using clear packing tape. Chic!
