Met Gala makes ‘return to chic’
Women’s Wear Daily editor Leigh Nordstrom says the 2023 Met Gala saw a number “chic fashion moments,” thanks partly to the evening’s theme, late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld. (May 2)

Of all the calculated, look-at-me vibes taking place at the Met Gala Monday night in New York, with Jared Leto in a cat costume and what looked like vegetation sprouting from Florence Pugh’s head, one person stood out in the throng of high-profile, well-heeled guests: Brittney Griner.
Literally and figuratively — Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, is 6 feet, 9 inches tall. But she also stood out for her mere presence, having a blast with her wife, Cherelle Griner, the two of them decked out in coordinated Calvin Klein.
Good for them. It’s hard to think of anyone more deserving of a night out on the town, especially this night in this particular town.

Brittney Griner on her Met Gala debut: ‘It means so much’
The Met Gala, a black-tie benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion wing, is held annually on the first Monday of May. What a difference a year makes.
On the first Monday of May 2022, Griner was living a nightmare, detained in Russian custody. She was convicted of drug possession and sentenced to nine years in prison in what was widely considered a political ploy. She was released in December as part of a prisoner exchange.
“It’s everything just to be here with my wife and just able to be here,” Griner told La La Anthony on Vogue’s livestream of the gala, according to People. “It means so much. Get to see this event a lot and actually live it. It’s amazing.”

Griner met with President Biden on Saturday
Brittney and Cherelle Griner also attended the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night as guests of CBS and Gayle King. Griner also met with President Joe Biden.
After the meeting, King posted a short video interview with the Griners, and asked Brittney what the meeting was like.
“It was emotional, that’s for sure,” Griner said.
Now it’s back to basketball for Griner — the Mercury begin WNBA play against the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, May 21. She won’t be wearing Chanel, but it’ll be great to see her back on the court.
It’s great to see her anywhere.
