Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet Review & Swatches

The new Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet ($34 US/$38 CAD) is a matte cream lipstick that offers opaque pigmentation and a comfortable texture. It gives lips a velvet veil of colour that is said to last up to 8 hours.
I don’t find 8 hours to be a realistic wear time, at least for me, but I do get about 4-5 hours of wear from these before I feel the need to reapply. These lipsticks feel light and comfortable. The velvet matte finish doesn’t feel drying on the lips, and I don’t find my lips to feel drier after wear, but the matte finish will of course accentuate any existing dryness that you have.
Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet comes in 14 shades:
- Light Nude No.01
- Fawn No.05
- Fawn Rose No.09
- Dark Rosewood No.17
- Primrose No.21
- Peach No.25
- Bright Crimson No.29
- Magenta No.33
- Regiment Red No.37
- Military Red No.41
- Brilliant Violet No.45
- Bright Plum No.49
- Oxblood No.53
- Black Cherry No.57
I have Light Nude No.01, Fawn Rose No.09, and Military Red No.41. Fawn Rose and Military Red are two of the four hero shades. The other hero shades are Bright Plum and Oxblood.
As with most matte formulas, the lighter shades can be a little more difficult to wear as they can highlight lip lines and dryness. Light Nude is a really pretty pale nude but I find it a bit aging on me. Fawn Rose is one of the prettiest shades of nude pink I have ever seen. I am obsessed. It is on the lighter side though so combined with the matte finish can still highlight the lines in my lips a little more than I’d like. Military Red is a little out of my comfort zone but wow, it is one stunning red! The brighter, darker shades are certainly more flattering with a matte formula such as this.

What I like about this formula is that it doesn’t dry down as fully as some other matte liquid lipsticks on the market. This means it isn’t as insanely long wearing as some matte liquid lipsticks, but I will happily trade a little bit of longevity for comfort. There is none of the dreaded cracking or the feeling that the life is being sucked out of your lips. They remain comfortable, and are completely weightless to the point I actually can’t feel them at all on my lips, and I usually forget I am wearing them.
They will transfer, but it is less so than a traditional lipstick, and it still wears for hours. I actually prefer how this formula looks after it has been on the lips for a while. Or you can blot it to achieve the soft focus effect sooner. I also find that it looks best if you blend it into your lips with a finger after applying to give lips the flattering soft focus effect. The way Military Red looks after being blended/blotted is so incredibly stunning.
Burberry Liquid Lip Velvets are available at selected Hudson’s Bay, Sephora and Nordstrom stores and online via thebay.com and sephora.ca.
