CULTURE CHANEL. the Woman reading | Venice tourism
by Jean-Louis Froment with the collaboration of Gabriella Belli
“The life we leave is never that much, the life that we dream is instead the largest existence because we will continue beyond death” – Coco Chanel
The exhibition-library dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel’s relationship with the reading consists of books, dedications, archives, photographs, paintings, drawings, objects of art, jewelry and perfumes of which Mademoiselle Coco liked to surround herself. Seventh leg of the Chanel Culture path which since 2007 has touched several capitals in the world, “Woman reading” will be open in Venice at the Gallery of Modern Art of Cà Pesaro, from 17 September 2016 to 8 January 2017.
Amongst the books in which, avid reader, immersed herself, stand out texts by Sophocles, Virgil, Rabelais, Shakespeare, Montaigne, Madame de Sevigne, Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rilke, Proust, Claudel, Apollinaire and Mallarmé. There are poems by Jean Cocteau, Max Jacob, Pierre Reverdy and the manuscript of Emma Bovary, published in 1856.
Amongst the photos of the actress, there is one that dates back to 1908 and immortalizes her asleept in a garden with a book in hand and a shot of Douglas Kirkland with her Chanel suit, on the couch, amongst her books, as she liked say, it was her “best friends.”
The choice of Venice to host this seventh chapter of the exhibition is not accidental. It is indeed one of the favorite cities for the French company, and for Coco herself that after the loss of her partner in 1920, amongst the beauties and mysteries of the city found refuge and inspiration.
