Cable Matters DisplayPort to DVI Cable (DP to DVI Cable) 6 Feet

Updated and edited: Spoiler – To more easily remove the DP plug from your computer, press on the black “Press” button as close to the computer as you can, but more importantly, it helps if you press on both sides of the ‘Press’ button so that you can be more certain that you are retracting both of the two little latches that are located on the same side of the plug as the ‘Press’ button. You will find that if you fully depress the ‘Press’ button in only one spot, and if you are also pressing too far from the center of the ‘Press’ button, you will not be retracting the far-side latch enough to release the DP plug from your computer or monitor.

They work great (bought two).

When it comes time to unplug them from the DP port, however, I have to psych myself up to be able to replicate the strength of a healthy 25 year old male in my thumb and forefinger.

In other words, and in all seriousness, I need to focus a lot of strength and mental focus to un-clip these.

Did I mention that they work great? I will probably buy more of these, because, well, they work great, and I can hang with the workout they pose.

I would caution you against purchasing these for elders without above average hand strength if they will ever need to be the ones who are to remove them from the DP port; and against purchasing these for use by youngsters without patience who I can envision trying to remove these with a net effect of requiring you to replace the computer if the integrated video port was used, or your replacing the video card if that is what is used instead of the integrated video port. ~ Grandpa Chris

[Update 2018.02.04]

The kindly Ms. C. at Cable Matters reached out to me with a cable-removing suggestion, and an offer to happily replace my two cables if her suggestion did not help me.

[Quote] “Would you please try inserting the DP connector further and then pressing the ‘PRESS’ to remove it from the DP port to see if it will be easier?”

I was moved, and I did try, and the cable slid out easily on my first attempt.

I immediately plugged it back in, and after 4 attempts, a short break, and another round of attempts, I had failed to remove it a second time.

I should point out that the ‘Press’ button is oriented underneath the plug in my video card, and not only can I not see the button, I can also not apply as much force upwards with my index finger when compared with the amount of downward force I would have been able to apply from above with my thumb, and my weight behind it, if only my video card were such that the ‘Press’ button were on top.

I would later conclude that the ease of my first and only successful attempt to remove the plug today to that point was due to my having laid my index finger all the way along the ‘Press’ button before pushing it, as opposed to later unsuccessful attempts during which I precisely recall pushing the button with only the tip of my finger, but with all the force I could muster.

Anyway, during round-3, I was successful. I examined the plug, I now understand why I had difficulty, and the solution is detailed above in this post’s opening paragraph.

I am now fully confident I can here-after remove the DP plug of this highly reliable, and very durable cables– another of which I will be buying again later, if needed, when I find a third monitor.

Dear CableMatters:

A suggestion to your shipping department

For the duration of your selling cables with this particular DP release mechanism, please include BOLD INSTRUCTIONS in the package recommending that users focus on pressing both sides of the ‘Press’ button. That simple concept has set me free.

Notes to CableMatters Technical support / Product development:

Try it your self. Hold the plug with the ‘Press’ button up, and while applying pressure to the button with one thumb, run the other thumb over the hooks. You might be as surprised as I was to realize just how much force is required to insure that both latches are retracted, even if you are focused on pressing it in the exact middle.

Okay, maybe it does not seem excessive to you. How about this; it might surprise you. Try it again, but this time, imitate my system setup by holding the plug 9-inches off the desktop (aka, no peaking) and with the ‘Press’ button down, underneath, on the bottom of the plug as you hold it.

Trying to retract the hooks using your index finger on the button when the button is underneath the plug, and is out of sight ain’t easy, is it?

My own conclusion is that the button does not travel far enough (not enough travel distance).

Additionally, the button, while being depressed, suddenly becomes massively more difficult to move inward further but at a point before the latches are fully retracted.

And/or: Are the latches not extending out quite a bit further than necessary to hold the plug? …because they sure as heck extend out a bit too far to be easily retracted with your current button mechanism.

Additional FYI: Your plug is not thin enough to clear the computer case frame

Your customer service rep Ms. C’s recommended that I insure I was pressing in on the plug all the way before pressing the ‘Press’ button. I can envision how that might have helped someone else. Not me though, because when your plug is plugged into my AMD Radeon R9 Fury, which is so close to the edge of the video card, that the long edge of your plug is resting on the computer case frame (or more specifically, your plug is resting on one of the non-removable PCI card slot dividers).

So, your plug is tightly sandwiching the case frame in-between the long edge of your plug, and the video card. In other words, the in-and-out ‘play’ of the plug is zero, thus rendering Ms. C’s advise inapplicable, unfortunately. That is an air-tight snug fit there, my friends, believe me.

Lastly, although I considered changing my 1-star rating, I decided not to. First of all, even if it were a 5-star rating, it would not mathematically change your Product Details rating. Rather, on your behalf, considering what I think would be best for you, the more attention this post of mine gets, the better for you, so as to enlighten as many of your customers and potential clients as possible, to help eliminate the frustration, and aggravation associated with your current DP release mechanism, while at the same time reassuring them that yours is an otherwise superior cable.

“All the best; intended.”

PS: I see not that CableMatters has already posted a reply below here. The post below is not nearly as charming as the one which was sent to me via email.
