Chanel is a French fashion house founded in 1909 by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. The house of Chanel produces haute couture, ready-to-wear, cosmetics, accessories, and other luxury goods.
Chanel is known for having popularised the timeless suit and little black dress. The brand has also become synonymous with the quilted purse, costume jewellery, the two-tone shoe and the Chanel No. 5 perfume. In an effort to conserve the French tradition of fine craftsmanship, Chanel has purchased several artisanal workshops over the years including the famous embroidery house Lesage.
In 2018, Chanel announced that it would be discontinuing the use of fur and exotic skins in its collections. Chanel is a privately owned company belonging to the Wertheimer family; Pierre Wertheimer was a business partner of Coco Chanel who helped her launch her perfume line. In 2019, following the death of esteemed creative director Karl Lagerfeld, his long-time assistant Virginie Viard took the helm of the brand.
