The Chanel 19 and the Chanel 22 are the latest two bags that made it into the Chanel’s classics list. If you don’t know what that is, the Chanel Classics are basically bags that the brand considers quintessential Chanel. The classics come back season after season, as opposed to seasonal bags that might only be there for one or multiple seasons.

Chanel’s Classic Bags are: the 2.55, the Classic flap, the Boy bag, the Chanel 19 and the Chanel 22.

Chanel 19

The Chanel 19 bag was launched in 2019 and was one of the last designs of Karl Lagerfeld, thus having a very special place in many Chanel lovers’ heart. The name echoes the 2.55 – a bag designed by Coco Chanel herself in February 1955.

The Chanel 22

The 22 bag, like the 19 bag gets its name from the year it was created. We first saw the 22 in the Spring – Summer 2022 ready to wear show designed by Virginie Viard.

Both bags are a part of Chanel’s classic collection, both bags’ names are named after the year they were created. They have a different legacy in terms of who designed them: Lagerfeld vs Viard, no doubt two very talented designers.

The Chanel 19

The Chanel 19 features soft leather (goatskin or lambskin) or tweed, in large quilts, multi-tone hardware, chunky chains, a back pocket and a woven CC logo.

It definitely has elements that reminds us of the Classic Flap, except it’s a way less structured, more relaxed and casual bag. The chunky chain, the mixed hardware and the slouchiness of the bag makes it perfect as as daily, casual bag (although you can dress it up as well).

The Chanel 19 has a long shoulder strap and can be worn 3 ways: crossbody, on the shoulder and hand held by the short chain.

Small: 6.2 x 10.1 x 3.5 in (16 × 26 × 9 cm)

Medium: 7.8 x 11.7 x 3.9 in (20 x 29 x 9.8)

Maxi : 9.8 x 14 x 4.3 in (25 x 36 x 11)

The Chanel 22

The Chanel 22 comes in either calfskin or tweet and features large flat quilts, a metal CHANEL logo on the front of the bag, leather and metal intertwined shoulder straps and a Chanel medallion on the Chain.

As opposed to the 19, the Chanel 22 is a tote, and it’s the only tote that is a part of Chanel’s classic line.

The bag is very unstructured and slouchy with a magnetic closure located inside the bag. Depending on the time it was purchased, the 22 comes with a extra pouch attached to the interior of the bag.

The Chanel 22 comes in 3 sizes:

Small – 13.5 x 14.4 x 3.1 in ( 34.5 x 37 x 8 cm)

Medium – 14.8 x 16.4 x 3.1 in (38 x 42 x 8 cm)

Large – 18.3 x 17.9 x 3.9 in (47 x 46 x 10 cm)

Comparison: Features 19 vs 22

Obviously, these are very different bags, for starters one is a shoulder bag and one is a tote. However, we do see plenty of similarities between them. As opposed to many Chanel bags, both the 19 and 22 are more casual, relaxed and slouchy. Both can fit quite a lot, depending on the size you go for. Naturally, if you need to carry a lot, then the 22 is more suitable. However, the 19 Maxi also fits a lot, including a MacBook 13 inches.

If you want a more versatile bag, then we would say that the 19 wins, simply because it can be worn in multiple ways. Because the 22 is a tote, there’s not much to do to actually dress it up. You can, however tuck in the long shoulder strap of the small 19 and wear it on a more formal occasion.

As we can see, you’d need to spend at least $5100 to get either bag. Overall, the Chanel 22 is cheaper than the Chanel 19 – and it makes sense since there’s way more elements that come into making the 19 (such as the chunky hardware, flap, back pocket, etc.).

Which one has a better resale value?

When spending over 5k on a Chanel bag, resale value has to be taken into consideration. We know that generally, Chanel keeps its value, partly because their frequent price increases.

When talking about the resale value, it’s also important to note that the bags’ resale value is also affected by you: if you kept the bag in pristine condition and if you kept all the accessories (such as dust bag, box, etc.) – the chances of getting a good resale value increase.

We looked at Fashionphile to determine the resale value of the Chanel 19 vs the Chanel 22.

Resale Value of the Chanel 19

For the Chanel 19, we specifically looked at the Medium size in leather, in good or excellent condition. We found that the average price of the 60 bags available with these characteristics was: 5,780 USD. The price now of a medium Chanel 19 is 6,300 USD – however, depending on when the people who are reselling the Chanel 19 actually bought their bag, they could break even or even make a slight profit.

The resale value of the Chanel 19 is not as high as the Classic Flap, at least for now. However, if you bought the bag now for $6300 and you can resale it for 10% less (so about $5700) we consider that a good or at least OK resale value.

Resale Value of the Chanel 22

We did the same exercise for the Chanel 22, looking at the pre-loved market at Small Chanel 22 bags in leather and it good / excellent condition.

We found that the average price of the 20 pieces available on the website was 5,860 USD. This is somewhat surprising since the price for a new Chanel 22 in the small size is 5,100 USD.

A sample size of 20, is by no mean an accurate statistical result, however it does sound like the Chanel 22 has a great resale value. And if you bought a Chanel 22 bag today you could potentially re-sale it for more that you acquired it.

Chanel 22 vs 19 – Resale value

Somewhat surprising, it seems like the Chanel 22 has a much better resale value than the 19. It can be because it’s a newer bag and thus more sought after or that the resale stock is simply lower.

If resale value is very important to you, it might be a good idea to invest into a Chanel 22 bag instead of the 19.

Which one is the best: Chanel 19 vs Chanel 22

This is quite a hard question because they are such different bags. Nonetheless, if you can only buy one, we recommend the Chanel19 – the reason is, the 19 is the more versatile bag and the most “classic looking”.

Have a look at your lifestyle and wardrobe, if you find yourself gravitating toward totes the majority of the time, then it would make sense to choose the 22 instead.

It’s all up to you, your style and lifestyle, and don’t worry, you can’t go wrong with any Chanel bag!
