Chanel CC Cream VS Bobbi Brown BB Cream

You may find it odd that I’m pitting a CC cream up against a BB cream for this review, but in fact, the Chanel CC cream is actually a revolutionary all-in-one product. It is a primer, concealer, sunscreen, tinted moisturizer, and a correcter, which basically makes it a BB and CC cream. The Chanel CC cream is in fact supposed to be so good, it can be used on its own without any other product for coverage (according to some beauty bloggers), so I wanted to test these two products to determine whether Chanel’s R700 CC cream is worth trading in my BB cream for. The reason why I chose Bobby Brown’s BB cream is because so far, of all the BB creams I’ve tested, this one seems to hold its own. I love everything about it-the coverage, texture, and longevity of the cream, as well as the fact that I can go out confidently with just this product on my face and nothing else over or under it.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on Chanel’s CC cream before it sold out (again) from Edgars in The Pavilion in Durban. This cream comes highly recommended and hailed as one of the best CC creams out there. Now for someone who has been a Bobbi Brown fan for the past few years, it was a difficult task to go to the Chanel counter and buy this-it’s like I was cheating on my best friend! It comes in two shades; Beige, which is for fair skin, and Beige Rose, which has a slightly pinkish undertone for Asian skin. I bought the Beige Rose, which is currently all that is available in SA at the moment. In the Bobbi Brown BB cream, I have the Light shade.

Chanel had quite a lot to live up to, because I’m perfectly happy with my Bobbi Brown BB cream. So let’s begin the review, shall we?

What Chanel says:

“A completely original creation. A fusion of skincare and makeup. The double know-how of CHANEL Research and the Makeup Studio. Backed by true expertise regarding the precise needs of Asian women in terms of flawless skin.

With its CHANEL signature, CC Cream combines 5 actions in 1 single step:

SOOTHES. Cornflower water comforts sensitive skin.

MOISTURIZES. Hyaluronic acid helps maintain hydration level all day long by trapping and retaining moisture inside the skin.

PROTECTS. SPF 30 and PA+++ sun filters block aging-accelerating UVA-UVB rays. A mineral filter guarantees higher tolerance on the skin.

PREVENTS. An active ingredient of natural origin, Rejuvencia, provides the best shield against external aggressions.

EVENS OUT IMPERFECTIONS. Redness, dark spots and pores are visibly diminished.

Within moments, skin appears flawless and glows with a natural beauty. The complexion is visibly even-toned, fresh and radiant.

CC Cream delivers complete correction and natural-looking, long-wear makeup. An ideal cream for day-long confidence with a lightweight, non-oily, comfortable texture.

CC CREAM is available in two shades: Beige 20 and Beige Rosé 12. Beige Rosé 12 with a slightly pinkish undertone is a shade specially formulated for Asian skin tone.”

What Bobbi says:

“Moisturize, perfect and protect – instantly and over time. Now it’s easier than ever to get great skin with Bobbi Brown’s new BB Cream SPF 35. Inspired by a skincare/makeup hybrid that’s a cult favorite in Asia, this formula combines moisturizer, treatment, Broad Spectrum SPF and a lightweight foundation in one. Plus, it’s now available in nine skin tone correct shades carefully formulated by Bobbi herself. Consider it your skin’s new best friend.”

The Product:

Chanel: The CC cream comes in a 30ml tube and I’m told it will last me quite long, because you just use a tiny amount at a time. It costs R775 at Edgars.

Bobbi Brown: The BB cream comes in a 40ml tube, and costs R425 at Edgars. One tube lasted me about 5 months.

The Application:

Chanel: The texture of the cream is quite lightweight, lighter than I expected it to be. I used very little, just a drop of the cream and when I rubbed it in it felt silky and smooth. Coverage is okay-ish. As it’s a very lightweight cream, the layer of cover is very thin. I think I would have to use a little more than a drop to even out my skin tone properly. As far as eliminating redness, it does a fantastic job, although for that purpose I think the L’oréal CC cream (see the review here) was much better. After a second layer, coverage was perfect except around the eyes where I still needed a bit of concealer to cover the dark circles. Still, for a CC cream to be able to compete with one of the best BB creams (in my opinion) out there thoroughly impressed me.

Bobbi Brown: This cream is slightly thicker in texture than the CC cream due to its foundation properties, and because of that, I use a very small amount on my face. It glides onto the skin and enhances my face beautifully, leaving it looking fresh and natural. This is my everyday cream that I use before I go out. I don’t use concealer around my eyes when I use this cream, but I find the Bobbi Brown tinted eye brightener works very well together with this BB cream.

**Something I have to include in this is that twice after doing the hand test for this review, I washed my hands and Chanel’s CC cream stayed put compared to Bobbi Brown’s BB cream, which completely washed off. Big plus for Chanel!

In Conclusion

I think Chanel’s CC cream can definitely hold it’s own against a BB cream, and I don’t find it necessary to use BB cream over the CC cream (like I do with L’oréal’s CC cream. Chanel’s gave me a slightly pinker look while Bobbi’s look was more yellow in hue, but it is not a stark difference. A downside to Chanel’s CC cream is also the limited shades, so if your skin is very fair, or very dark, then you definitely won’t be buying this. Bobbi Brown however has nine shades, so you should be able to find a shade that’ll be perfect for you.

Pricewise, Chanel (R775) is far more expensive than Bobbi Brown (R425) and for the price of one Chanel CC cream, you could buy a Bobbi Brown BB cream and L’oréal Nude Maqique CC cream, but then you would have to contend with applying two products.

Personally I wouldn’t use Chanel CC cream as an everyday product, because even though it’s time-saving, and gives an amazing overall effect, the cost puts me off from using it too often, but it’s definitely a must for those special occasions, and worn with Chanel’s Perfection Lumière foundation would provide an almost flawless finish. I still love Bobbi’s BB cream as an everyday product, first because it’s much more affordable, and second because of the excellent coverage the Chanel can’t give me…x
