Chanel’s Nana Komatsu gives us Penelope Tree vibes
Virginie Viard and Chanel have just revealed what we should all be wearing next fall and winter and the vibe is definately bohemian vintage english style. In a new video and photo series for the house , Japanese actress Nana Komatsu performs in a set inspired by the movie “Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?” (1966), made by director and photographer William Klein. The movie is about a young American model in Paris, played by Dorothy McGowan. In the original movie Polly Maggoo, played by Dorothy McGowan, is a model from Brooklyn who lives a glitzy and glamorous life in Paris. The film set in Chanel’s video, which was created by artist duo Inez & Vinoodh, reflects the apartment of the movie’s heroine.
The winter flower traverses the Fall-Winter 2023/24 Ready-to-Wear collection in little, joyful touches, blooming over pockets, jackets, buttons, and in the suspended romanticism of the prints. Virginie Viard wanted this collection to be delicate and in motion. “The energy of the merry-go-round of wooden horses that provides the setting for Inez & Vinoodh’s film, with actress Nana Komatsu as the heroine, gave me the idea for the Bermuda shorts suits and the asymmetries,” she reveals. Black, white, shades of pink, the palette is as precise as it is profound. The faded colours, the dusky pink, the crafted pieces, the touches of 1960s and 70s, gives off a certain English vibe. According to the photographers, the idea of the shoot and the styling is to show a spirit of playfulness, cheerfulness and freedom and a Japanese woman living it up in Paris. But, in terms of styling and especially Virgine Viard vibing english sixties designs, this could just as easily have been inspired by one of the most popular models of the sixties: Penelope Tree – a young American model living the high life in London, the fashion capital of the swingin’ sixties.
Penelope Tree, who came from a very wealthy American family, was only 13 years old when she was discovered by photographer Diane Arbus, but it wasn’t until she was seventeen that her modeling career took off. It happened after she met photographers Cecil Beaton and Richard Avedon and Vogue editor Diana Vreeland at Truman Capote’s legendary Black & White Ball Party in New York and Vreeland booked her the next day for a shoot with Avadon for American Vogue. Along with Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy, Penelope Tree also enjoyed great success in Europe, becoming the epitome of the swinging sixties look. In London, she became the girlfriend of photographer David Bailey, who has taken some of her best-known pictures.
