About Chanel

Chanel is a French company that makes luxury products. It specialises in fragrance, makeup and skincare but its jewellery, watches, and clothing are often sought after.

It all began in 1883 when Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel opened a millinery shop. It was a part of a building that featured a salon frequented by men and women of society. This provided the young entrepreneur with the opportunity to sell hats to the rich women of the time.

After attracting finance in 1910 she commissioned Ernest Beaux, a perfumer, to create the first line of scents for her brand. The result was the legendary Chanel No 5.

Today, Alain Wertheimer and Gérard Wertheimer own the company. They are the grandsons of Pierre Wertheimer, one of the early financiers of the company.
