FUBU will go down in history as a revolutionary and iconic brand that spoke to a generation of doers. For nearly 30 years, FUBU was one of the most popular fashion brands in the world, and now they’ve returned to reclaim that throne, but in a different direction.

J. Alexander Martin, a well-known fashion mogul, cofounded FUBU with Daymond John, Keith Perrin, and Carl Brown in 1992. FUBU generated $350 million in sales through 5,000 retail stores at its peak in 1998, and eventually grossed more than $6 billion worldwide.

Martin says that his entire life’s mission has been based on the premises of shifting change within the Black community. “Change excites me. I consider myself to be the culture. I believe I’ve devoted my entire life to our culture. To me, being an advocate entails actually living it and doing it. It’s not enough to just say it. It’s not something to ponder. You have to be courageous and honest with yourself, regardless of what comes after that,” expresses Martin.

Martin continues to raise the bar of excellence by creating culture-relevant content. He had a strong interest in television, which led to VOD deals with Verizon and Comcast. The streaming platform For Us By Us Network was launched on April 1, by Martin, along with co-founder and president Roberto “Rush” Evans.

As one of the original founders of FUBU, Martin, has a keen understanding of the urban consumer, not only in terms of fashion but also in terms of entertainment. The For Us By Us Network was founded with the goal of providing high-quality cultural content to the culture.

Evans will oversee production on the For Us By Us Network, focusing on pop culture delivered through fresh, innovative content. Already a successful producer, having worked at several major companies including the Love & Hip Hop franchise, Monami Ent, Saturday Night Live Broadway Video, and the viral series King of South Beach, he hopes to bring the same production value with, positive story narratives, to a digital audience.

“Our platform will be very unique and I’m excited that we will be able to deliver an extraordinary library of movies, series and original content related to the hip hop culture and lifestyle,” states Evans.

Through the platform, For Us By Us will release a diverse range of culturally relevant programming, including reality, scripted, documentaries, and films. With the rise of video streaming services, the collective goal is to become the leading player in the digital storytelling space by creating content for the culture.

For Us By Us Network will be a great alternative for Black households this spring and beyond, especially with Netflix raising its prices and monitoring sharing. The Making of Saucy Santana, Slaughter Slays, Fosters Law, Cocaine Sisters, and Vicious, starring Tami Roman and directed by Kim Fields, will be among the original films and series to be released on the network.

The network will have a built-in audience focused on its African American-targeted original and licensed content. The new platform powers a direct-to-consumer live TV streaming service while also combining advertising video-on-demand (AVOD) and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) into a single platform. The suggested retail price is $24.99 per quarter or $79.99 per year.

Some content will be ad-supported and free to subscribers, while other premium content will require a subscription. To boost subscriptions and maximize the value of its programs for different audiences, the company will leverage its branding expertise and create cultural content for national and international growth.

“If you get on and can’t afford a subscription, you can still watch great content, not necessarily premium content, but you can watch traditional TV, which is linear, 24 hours a day. That is something that no other platform offers,” adds Martin.

With shows like Chopping It Up With Charles Oakley Cooking Show, For Us By Us Network has a track record of producing current, trendy, relevant, and fresh content that has garnered millions of views. The For Us By Us Network library will include original episodic series and feature films in addition to programs previously released by the Network on their website.

Martin tells us that it’s about more than just competing with other subscription services for him. “Our formula, I believe, is that we provide whatever we desire. We are the customer and consumer, and we are responsible for providing whatever we want and need. So I’m not only doing what the culture and the people want, I am the culture and the people so, it’s a very natural process,” Martin says.
