Dua Lipa Ushers in Her Met Gala Co-Chair Era in a Chanel Vintage Bridal Look From 1992
Dua Lipa is officially in her Met Gala co-chair era, cementing her new epoch on the 2023 Met Gala ivory carpet in vintage Chanel, no less.
Joining the likes of Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz and Roger Federer, the pop super nova has taken on her most significant role in fashion history thus far by co-chairing this year’s ball in celebration for the Costume Institute’s exhibition: “Karl: A Line of Beauty.”
Tweed and pearls, two of Lagerfeld’s staples, isn’t something we see Lipa gravitate towards in her own everyday pop sensation wardrobe.
So, you can imagine our delight when the three-time Grammy Award winner departed from her usual technicolor Y2K silhouettes and looked to Chanel’s vast archive for her look.
For the occasion, the 27-year-old British starlet opted for one of Lagerfeld’s most revered collections, Chanel’s Fall/Winter 1992 haute couture collection. If the ivory tweed ball gown appears to be befitting for a bride, it’s because it is.
More than Lagerfeld loved his muses, he loved his brides, closing out each of his haute couture collection at the luxury French maison with an avant-garde take on a white dress.
It was his signature, and more importantly, a significant moment in any model’s careers when their “It girl” status was cemented by being chosen to be a Chanel bride and close out the collection hand-in-hand with the late-German fashion designer.
For his FW92 collection, fellow German fashion maven, Claudia Schiffer, was selected to embody the enviable je ne sais quoi of the Chanel bride.
A role Schiffer would subsequently reprise another 10 times, making her eleven Chanel bridal looks some of the most memorable in Lagerfeld’s life.
It’s a poignant full circle moment for Lagerfeld’s legacy to see his dress now donned one by a 21st century fashion maverick.
In the very stitching of the woolen fabric, the glistening silver threads and black accents of the corset represent everything Lagerfeld stood for: innovation and beauty above all else.
Unlike on the runway, Lipa and her stylist Lorenzo Posocco kept her ensemble minimal, ditching Schiffer’s white flat-top hat and camellia hair accents for a more timeless take on the gown, exalting the everlasting style of the corseted dress.
Instead, Lipa chose to wear a glistening diamond necklace from Tiffany & Co. that perfectly framed her décolletage. As Lipa revealed on the red carpet, this 200 carat diamond necklace, dubbed the Lucida® Star Necklace, is a never-before-seen piece from Tiffany’s archives, completing her vintage silhouette with a touch of sparkle.
If we are to glean from this look, it’s that Lagerfeld x Lipa is a match made in heaven.
