Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum – Review

One of the beauty industry’s oldest and most iconic products, the Night Repair Serum, is known by all skincare enthusiasts. Many of EL’s competitors try to replicate it, but they simply can’t as the product is upgraded every few years with new, patented technologies.

The formula of the product was curated around the idea of skin rejuvenation. There are a few classic ingredients like everyone’s favourite glycerine, as well as trendy squalane and hyaluronic acid. On top of that, we have various ferments with specific bacteria strains, which played a key role in the first formulations of the product introduced in the last century. Over the years, the serum has been improved and enriched with more and more components like the Chronolux™, a peptide whose action is explained in this patent application for a mixture targeting to repair UV-damaged skin. I’ve also found two other of EL’s patents expositions for methods that were most likely used in this product. The first one describes a formulation technique with MicroRNAs; there’s sodium RNA present in this product. Another one explains how to create an amalgam for enhancing the look of the skin using peptides and plant extracts, one of the mentioned ones, chamomile flower extract, is used in this preparation. This patent would also explain why EL claim that the Night Repair Serum is protected until 2033, as patents last 20 years and its patent application was filed in 2013. Probably, there is more scientific know-how employed in this product, but I cannot unearth all of EL’s secrets.

The serum is free of fragrance, and it’s suitable for all skin types, designed for damaged and ageing skin.

Admittedly, I’m not the type of customer that EL target with this product. I don’t have much sun damage, and my skin isn’t sagging much yet, but as they say, it’s easier to prevent than treat. Regardless, I have been able to enjoy and observe the results that this serum yields. After the first few days of using, my skin started to appear more radiant, more supple, and well-rested even without much sleep. Also, blemishes and temporary redness disappear faster when I use this serum regularly. The Night Repair Serum acts like other fermented products; it provides nutrients to strengthen and regenerate the compromised skin barrier. I don’t believe this product is much of an anti-wrinkle preparation; nothing can beat sunscreen and retinoids. However, it is worth incorporating skincare products that support the skin’s microbiome and deliver ingredients that aid skin’s repairing processes like the Chronolux™ and sodium RNA. The serum has a lightweight, watery texture, and I would be happy to use it instead of the SK-II Essence, which is also based on ferments and has similar marketing claims. Is one better than the other? I am not the best person to assay that, but surely you get more R&D for your money with the Night Repair Serum. The SK-II Essence hasn’t changed for decades.

The Night Repair Serum is a fantastic addition to any skin regimen. It will enhance the appearance of your complexion, bolster your skin barrier and enrich the skin flora. Because just like with the belly, our skin needs good bacteria to function properly. Even though the product provides many wholesome ingredients, it shouldn’t be the only plan of action for damaged skin that requires extra care.
