Today I am bringing you a review of the Essence Skin Lovin’ Sensitive face serum. This is an affordable skincare product (I mean it’s Essence, so it better be!) and their skincare, like their makeup can be a bit hit or miss. This is labelled similary to some products the brand came out with in their makeup line and those products I liked quite a bit in general. In fact, the Skinlovin’ Sensitive powder is one of my all time favorite powders and I like it even better than most high end powders I tried. So the question is: is the Skinloving’ Sensitive face serum as good?

Skincare review: Essence Skin Lovin’ Sensitive Face Serum

One of the reasons why I like trying out Essence skincare is similar to why I like trying their makeup: it’s affordable, easy for me to get a hold of and they are always revamping the line and therefore I can keep trying new stuff. Their Skinlovin’ Sensitive line is especially formulated for sensitive skin and therefore it is perfect for my dry/ dehydrated and sensitive skin. This serum retails for €4.95 which if any good is a very affordable face serum.

What does this serum have to offer?

This serum has some skincare properties that should help hydrate, nourish and soothe sensitive skin. It is fragrance free and it free from alcohol, silicones, parabens and mineral oils. It contains aloe vera and allantoine and it can be used both as part of a day time and a night time skincare routing. Given the texture this has, I prefer using this as part of my night time skincare routine to get my skincare routine started after cleansing my face. If you wish, the brand claims you could even use this as primer under makeup.

What are the ingredients like?

I always like including the ingredient list when I review a skincare product. Granted, I am no dermatologist and chemist so I can’t be the best judge, but I have reviewed my fair share of skincare and can decipher what is most important. That said, I have tried products with ingredient lists that sounded great that didn’t work for me at all and I have tried products with ‘bad’ ingredient lists that ended up working really well for me. So for me, the ingredient list is a nice bonus, but it is not enough for me to know whether something is right for me. In any case, this is the ingredient list:

Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Isopropyl Myristate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Caprylic/capric Triglyceride, Enantia Chlorantha Bark Extract, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Butylene Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Oleanolic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid.

The two ingredients the label boasts about are quite low down: in the second half of the ingredient list. That means that both of these ingredients aren’t that heavily concentrated in this product at all. What it does contain is water and glycerin which are great for a simple, affordable product like this, but nothing groundbreaking. What did stand out to me is the Enantia Chlorantha Bark Extract. This extract supposedly does a few things, but it mostly helps against inflammation and irritation. So the ingredient list is basic, with some good ingredients and as long as this works I will be happy.

When I first used this I was surprised by the texture of this serum. It is quite a rich and thick serum. Many sensitive skin products I have tried are usually the opposite: as they have very few active ingredients to not irritate the skin, I find them usually thin and not that moisturizing. Not moisturizing enough for my dry/ dehydrated skin anyway. This is very much a good product for not only my dry skin, but also my skin’s sensitivities. It doesn’t make my skin irritated or red and it nourishes my skin at the same time.

When blending this into the skin, I feel this is thick and moisturizing, but also thin enough for it be absorbed by the skin quickly enough for me to layer other skincare on top. That’s how I like using serums: as a starting layer and then I always go in with at least a moisturizer. My skin just fares best with thinner layers of several skincare products rather than just one. It’s what I have found works best for me through trial and error. So what does this do? In the end, I feel this nourishes my skin and keeps it hydrated, but I don’t think it does enough for me to repurchase it.

My final thoughts

The Essence Skinlovin’ Sensitive face serum is a nice serum for sure, but the texture combined with how much you use every time you use this, makes this not so affordable in the end. I have used this up almost completely and I feel I only opened this the other day. So even though this is affordable, it takes too much product for me to get the effect I want to achieve and therefore I don’t mind spending a bit more on a different product to get a similar result, but that makes it more affordable in the long run as I don’t have to use so much product every time.

Would I recommend the Essence Skinlovin’ Sensitive face serum?

I think this is a good one. If you have sensitive skin and you want to try a good, basic face serum that can work as a good first step in a skincare routine. If you have sensitive skin then I think it is good that this has no fragrance at all and it has a good texture that will help if you have dry to normal skin. If you have super dry skin, this may not be rich enough and if you have oily skin this may be a bit too rich.

Have you ever tried any Essence skincare?
