Fragrance Review: Chanel – Coco Mademoiselle L’Eau Privée

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I like Coco Mademoiselle and its Intense flanker. However, neither have quite made it to my wishlist. I admire their composition, and enjoy their passing whiff… but, every time I’ve worn them myself, I’ve found them somewhat tiring, overwhelming – especially on the patchouli-musk front.

So, when Chanel released a lighter flanker to the line, I felt optimistic. A watercolour Coco Mademoiselle sounded like a terrific idea – at least for my personal stand on the original. I even love the new twist on the (always gorgeous) pink bottle, too. Yay!

Well, Coco Mademoiselle L’Eau Privée didn’t turn out to be exactly what I was hoping for; but it’s exactly what it proposes itself to be.

Review

Coco Mademoiselle L’Eau Privée is announced as a particularly soft fragrance, meant for use before going to sleep. And, indeed, it smells just like the powerful belting of Coco Mademoiselle has been turned into a recognizable but faint hum.

From the original scent, L’Eau Privée takes a lot of fresh, sweet orange, and a floral duo of pink, plush rose and luminous jasmine, melted into a smooth, soft focus (very pretty!) accord. There’s no sign of neither vetiver nor tonka, but despite having little to no patchouli, L’Eau Privée still holds that round, creamy base so characteristic of Coco Mademoiselle (and Coco Noir, and Chance EdP): white musk.

Now, this base is usually the “culprit” for my hard time wearing any of these scents, despite almost loving them. On the bright side, as I’ve hoped, in L’Eau Privée that musky roundness is so soft it doesn’t upset my nose. It stays in the background, allowing me to enjoy Coco Mademoiselle‘s (so beautiful!) signature orange, rose & jasmine combo. On the other hand…

When Chanel markets this fragrance as soft, they mean it. At least to my nose, L’Eau Privée is not only airy and gentle (which would be ok – I love Les Eaux de Chanel!) but also extremely short-lived. Yes, as I’ve said, it’s not like the brand claims otherwise; but I kind of hoped this would perform as an EdT… and it really doesn’t. <– Not a fault if you really want to wear it (as intended) before sleeping, but it’s something to keep in mind in case (like me) you were hoping for a daily-wearable “Coco Mademoiselle Light”.

Coco Mademoiselle L’Eau Privée was created by Chanel’s in-house perfumer, Olivier Polge.

Conclusion

Rendering Coco Mademoiselle‘s abstract pink florals fresher and smoother, L’Eau Privée is my favourite iteration of this fragrance – it’s a pity it has such a faint performance!

If you’re a fan of the original and are looking for an extra calm, whispery version of it for sleeping, this will fit like a glove… But I can’t help but think this was a missed opportunity for Coco Mademoiselle to reach another (bigger?) public, who’d love a lighter but more outside-wearable take on it.

(Perhaps I just need to retest the Eau de Toilette version? I recall it being very similar to the original EdP – still a tad too loud, for me – but it’s been a while… It’s a pity I like the bottle less, though.)

As it is, Coco Mademoiselle L’Eau Privée is sadly a bit too faint… but soooo pretty it might end up sneaking into one’s wishlist.
