How to Download Video From Google Chrome

If you’re trying to download a video from a website on Chrome, you have a choice of a few different approaches to get your clip. In the simplest case, the video might be set up to allow for easy downloading, and then you can use the standard downloading functionality in Chrome. However, it’s more likely that you’ll need to either use a Chrome extension or video downloader app to get your video, and there are also web-based tools you can use to get a downloadable version of videos from places like YouTube.

Downloading Using Chrome Itself

If the video you want to download has been made available to download by the website, the process is basically the same as downloading any other file, as explained by Google. If there is a direct link to the download, you can just click the link or right-click and choose “Save as.” However, in most cases for videos, you’ll need to put your mouse cursor over the video and click the download icon, which is an arrow pointing downwards to a horizontal line. If this option isn’t available, this means the website hasn’t made the video available to download.

You’ll see the name of the file at the bottom of your Chrome window when the download is complete. To open it, simply click on the file name, or to go to the location of the file, click the down arrow beside the file name and choose “Show in folder.”

Video Downloader Chrome Extension

By far the most popular solution for downloading a video on Chrome is to use an extension designed explicitly for the purpose. There are numerous options for an extension to download videos, as listed by Software Testing Help. For example, you can use extensions like Video Downloader Professional, Video Downloader Plus or SaveFrom to download videos from various sites through your Chrome browser.

For example, for Video Downloader Professional, you navigate to the page that contains the video you want to download and click the green arrow icon beside your address bar to open the menu. This gives you options for the resolution you want to download in and which specific video you want to download.

These tools are sometimes limited – for example, many don’t allow you to download videos from YouTube – but they are almost all free so you can try a few different options and see which one works best for you.

Online Video Downloading Solutions

If neither of the above options work for you or you don’t want to download a Chrome extension, there are also several options that work entirely online and provide a download link so you can use Chrome’s in-built downloader to get the clip. One example is SaveFrom, which explicitly functions as a YouTube video downloader, but doesn’t work too well with videos from other sources. Other options like SaveTheVideo work in the same way for videos from a wider range of sources.

The services all work in a very similar way. First, navigate to the page which contains the video you want to download, and then copy the URL by highlighting it and pressing “Ctrl” and “C” (or right-clicking and choosing “Copy”). Now go to the downloading website and paste the URL in the field provided (either press “Ctrl” and “V” or right-click and choose “Paste”). You then click “Download” to get your video, with some sites offering additional choices for things like file format and video quality.
