Luxury Brand Ranking – The Top Luxury Brands

By: Frank DePino | March 23, 2023

Whether you’re looking for the most popular luxury brands or the most sustainable, having a list in front of you makes it easier to compare your options. What goes into ranking a brand?

When compiling luxury brand rankings, various factor are taken into consideration such as profitability by year, popularity, trustworthiness, and environmental friendliness. The luxury brands are then assigned a rank based on how well they adhere to this criteria.

In today’s post, we’ve ranked luxury brands based on unique criteria: popularity, value, eco-friendly status, and trustworthiness. These lists are each comprised of 10 brands so as not to overwhelm you with too many options.

We hope this luxurious brand ranking post helps you find your next favorite luxury brand!

What Is a Luxury Brand?

Before we get into the lists, let’s briefly recap what a luxury brand is.

A luxury brand meets very specific criteria for extraordinariness, rarity, aesthetics, and quality. Accompanying these posh goods is a high price tag that’s indicative of the quality.

Consumers gravitate towards luxury brands because of what they represent, which is a sense of style and extravagance.

A luxury brand can run the gamut from car manufacturers to clothing and handbag brands to watchmakers and fragrance producers.

Now that you’ve had that refresher, let’s start our first list by going over the top 10 luxury brands that have, in 2022, ranked well for popularity:

  1. Gucci
  2. Dior
  3. Chanel
  4. Louis Vuitton
  5. Hermes
  6. Rolex
  7. Tiffany
  8. Prada
  9. Versace
  10. Ralph Lauren

Does this luxury brand ranking surprise you? Eight out of the 10 in this list are fashion brands. The only ones that aren’t are Rolex–a luxury watch brand–and Tiffany–a luxury jewelry brand.

Yet when you look deeper into luxury fashion, their dominance over the popularity department shouldn’t come as so much of a surprise.

According to an early 2022 report from Statista, in 2021, the worldwide luxury fashion market saw a huge bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing revenue to almost $108.4 billion that year.

In a separate piece of Statista data from 2022, the luxury fashion segment brought in $97.23 billion in revenue by the time the report was published. (2022 was not yet finished, which explains why the revenue is lower for 2022 than in 2021).

Between 2022 and 2027, the compound annual growth rate or CAGR of the luxury fashion segment is expected to continue growing year over year by 5.62 percent, which is quite a healthy margin.

The Top 10 Most Valuable Luxury Brands in 2022

What makes a luxury brand valuable? That all has to do with how much money the brand is raking in, of course.

A popular luxury brand is not necessarily the most profitable, although popularity does help significantly raise a company’s bottom line.

Per Statista, here are the top 10 most profitable luxury brands on the planet.

  1. Porsche ($31.6 billion in worldwide revenue)
  2. Louis Vuitton ($14.9 billion in worldwide revenue)
  3. Chanel ($13.2 billion in worldwide revenue)
  4. Cartier ($12.1 billion in worldwide revenue)
  5. Hermes ($11.7 billion in worldwide revenue)
  6. Gucci ($11.1 billion in worldwide revenue)
  7. Ferrari ($9.2 billion in worldwide revenue)
  8. Rolex ($7.9 billion in worldwide revenue)
  9. Dior ($7.8 billion in worldwide revenue)
  10. Guerlain ($5.7 billion in worldwide revenue)

A lot of the most popular luxury brands made an appearance in this list (Chanel, Gucci, Hermes, Dior), but this list was not completely dominated by fashion brands.

Watchmaker Rolex had a slot, as did two car manufacturers, Porsche and Ferrari.

There may not be many car manufacturers on this list, but it’s very telling that Porsche topped the entire list.

When you consider that a 2023 Porsche Macan starts at $57,500, a 2023 Porsche 718 Boxster is $65,500, and a 2023 Porsche 718 Spyder starts at $103,400, it’s easy to see why Porsche was at the top.

Compared to a fashion brand, Porsche is making large sums of money faster for its car sales.

Eco-friendliness is something more of the planet is concerned with than perhaps ever before.

According to a 2022 article in Bankrate, about 85 percent of people are making more eco-conscious purchasing decisions.

That can directly impact the revenue generation of luxury brands. Which ones have responded in kind by producing more sustainable goods? Here’s a top 10 list courtesy of Statista.

  1. Chanel (18 percent sustainable, 30 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  2. Hermes (17 percent sustainable, 26 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  3. Dior (21 percent sustainable, 22 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  4. Burberry (22 percent sustainable, 20 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  5. Celine (23 percent sustainable, 16 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  6. Louis Vuitton (17 percent sustainable, 22 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  7. Gucci (18 percent sustainable, 20 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  8. Prada (19 percent sustainable, 19 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  9. Bottega Veneta (20 percent sustainable, 17 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)
  10. Ralph Lauren (21 percent sustainable, 14 percent leading in luxury fashion sustainability)

Allow us to explain the percentages a little bit more in case you’re confused. These are all according to consumer perception, Statista notes.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s assess the list a little bit more.

This list is 100 percent fashion brands, likely because it’s easier for these luxury brands to become more sustainable.

For instance, they can switch to eco-friendly materials or simplify production processes.

Making watches such as Rolex does might be harder to do in a sustainable way, and cars–even of the luxury variety–are not terribly sustainable either.

The Top 10 Luxury Brands by Trustworthiness in 2022

The last top 10 luxury brand ranking we’ve got for you is a list of the most trustworthy.

According to a 2021 publication of Harvard Business Review, when HBR surveyed 1,000 customers, over 80 percent of them reported that trust was one of the most important factors that determined their purchasing decision.

A luxury brand, just like any non-luxury brand, has to work hard to build trust among its audience and then continue cultivating that trust to retain customer loyalty over the years.

Which luxury brands are deemed the most trustworthy in 2022? Per data from Statista, the list is as follows.

  1. Hermes (7.7 percent)
  2. Chanel (7.6 percent)
  3. Louis Vuitton (7.4 percent)
  4. Dior (6.9 percent)
  5. Burberry (6.9 percent)
  6. Ralph Lauren (6.8 percent)
  7. Prada (6.8 percent)
  8. Gucci (6.7 percent)
  9. Loro Piana (6.7 percent)
  10. Giorgio Armani (6.7 percent)

As has been the case several times over now, luxury fashion brands comprised the entirety of the list.

As you’ll see by those percentages, the rate of trustworthiness from one brand to another is very, very close, usually with a margin of only several percentage points.

Why this luxury brand ranking? What makes a brand trustworthy?

It comes down to a slew of qualities, really.

A brand has to be transparent. These days, luxury brands showcase transparency by telling brand stories that go deeply into their histories. They offer behind-the-scenes glimpses into fashion lines or how certain goods are made.

It’s all about peeling back the curtain and giving customers a unique glimpse into what makes a luxury brand a luxury brand.

Quality is another factor in trustworthiness that luxury brands would especially excel in.

The higher the quality of the goods a brand sells, the more that people believe in that brand because they haven’t been steered wrong before.

Sustainability is another sterling quality that helps luxury brands build trust, which is why many of the most eco-friendly brands from the list prior are on this list of the most trusted luxury brands.

Honesty is important as well.

Companies mess up, even high-end luxury brands. Taking responsibility and ownership of that helps consumers to forgive and forget more than hiding facts and trying to sweep things under the rug.
