Well, if you ask Balenciaga, the markup price would be nearly 600 times that. To understand what I’m talking about, meet the Safety XL Earrings, the luxury label’s most controversial accessory.
Now available at Farfetch for a whopping $665 CAD, the safety pin drop earrings, which have “Balenciaga” engraved on the clasps, the recent re-stock has fashion lovers and critics scratching their heads.
“Balenciaga is selling safety pin earrings for $665. So, everyone is running out of ideas for products? Is this really real? SAFETY PINS that you can get at the store for under $5. I just…” wrote one Twitter user.

This isn’t this the first time that Balenciaga ripped an idea off a basic everyday item. Remember in 2017 when they made a copy cat version of Ikea’s blue reusable shopping bag?

While the idea of paying over $600 for safety pin earrings may seem ridiculous for most (the earrings are already sold out on the Balenciaga site), the French label is right about one thing: the return of ‘90s grunge.
Naturally, with the comeback of Dr.Martens boots nostalgic it-girl trends like lug-sole boots, over-sized plaid shirt jackets, graphic t-shirts, heavy metal details, and yes, even safety pin earrings (as seen on Kendall Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence) are back and stronger than ever.
