My Burberry Black : Heavy Rain On Flowers And Warm Skin
Burberry has released a flanker to their hugely popular My Burberry for fall, a slightly darker and sexier take on the original – My Burberry Black. From Burberry:
Created by Chief Creative and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Bailey, working in collaboration with perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, My Burberry Black bottles the sensual elements of a black Burberry trench coat against bare skin.
I definitely notice the Kurkdjian touch in My Burberry Black – he has a way with resins and sweetness. They feel light as a feather, but fool you by wafting in and out for hours. What would be heavy, heady and cloying in the average Oriental floral becomes ethereal and almost spectral in the hands of Francis Kurkdjian. It’s funny – even though the Black moniker implies a heavy darkness, I find My Burberry Black softer than the original My Burberry. It’s less soapy than the original, but sweeter and darker without being heavier if that makes any sense.
The fragrance fuses the scent of sun-drenched jasmine flower and peach nectar with a touch of rose. The signature rose note at the heart of My Burberry is given a sweet and inviting candied twist, while rich amber patchouli rounds off the scent for a deep and captivating finish.
The peaches and amber are the stars of My Burberry Black, with the rose weaving in and out. Although they are not anywhere near the same, the roses and patchouli remind me a bit of the dry down of CHANEL Coco Mademoiselle. Sort of a magical rose and musk, with hints of Narciso Rodriguez For Her. If you like either of those fragrances you need to try My Burberry Black.
On first sniff, it’s all peaches. The peaches get softer and boozy as the amber weaves it’s way around the fruits. The rose is very soft and not soapy or overly feminine and warms beautifully on the skin. Actually there is no reason a man could not wear this fragrance. The patchouli-rose duo is a classic combination in perfume, but wrapping it in peaches and amber gives it a whole new gourmand vibe. And by gourmand I mean boozy, versus caramel or confection.
The base and dry down is where I find a gorgeous green jasmine. It’s not strong or indolic, just green and with that almost “chewy” thing that Kurkdjian does so well – think Baccarat Rouge. My Burberry Black as a whole is enticing, but not intense. It’s easy to wear, with that coming and going magic I love in a perfume. It lasts and lasts on the skin, but never yells or becomes cloying. It is an eau de parfum, so I apply judiciously of course, so you might be able to make this a sillage monster if you apply a lot. But, please don’t, no one wants to eat your perfume.
The bottle is STUNNING. Simply gorgeous. I love the heavy glass, the dark tint, and the horn/tortoiseshell cap and black ribbon. My particular bottle has my initials on the bottle, and if you buy yours from Burberry.com or select Burberry stores, yours can be as well. I LOVE this idea. If you loved My Burberry, you must seek out My Burberry Black. If you love soft, sexy and slightly dark perfumes, give this one a try. Like the iconic Burberry trench coat, a rich dark floral like My Burberry Black can become a must-have in your collection.
