[Review] Dear, Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop
Prevention is crucial to every anti-aging game. Protect your skin before the signs of aging appear, they say but realistically how many will protect the skin from what’s invisible to their eyes? I’m sure there are hardcore skin enthusiasts who are diligent and consistent with their anti-aging products but the general populace won’t start until it’s usually too late. Unlike sunscreen, which I think is enjoying a surge in attention and popularity (as it should), anti-aging products are often sought out when the fine lines, wrinkles and signs of aging already reside on the skin.

This night serum reduces fine lines and wrinkles using a dual peptide formula strengthened by EGF (sh-Oligopeptide-1) and bFGF (sh-Polypeptide-1). Ten ingredients fight and prevent aging to maintain youthful-looking skin.
What the serum aims to do:
- improve skin elasticity and complexion
- give skin radiance and luminosity
- lighten hyper-pigmentation
- reduce wrinkles and fine lines
The Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop is said to work by nourishing and replenishing the skin. It encourages cellular activity and by doing so activates skin renewal which keeps the skin looking youthful. It is formulated with peptides EGF and bFGF, which are naturally occurring proteins but decline with age, just like everything else. Peptides are naturally tied to collagen as they are formed as the result of collagen breakdown. They play a huge role by alerting the skin when collagen is lost and that’s what kick starts regeneration. The problem is, when collagen is lost due to age or environmental factors, it’s more difficult to replace and at times not entirely. That’s when wrinkles and fine lines set in and the skin begins to lose elasticity, hence it sags.
Some might wonder, well, why don’t we just use products containing collagen instead, why take the peptide route? Collagen is too large to penetrate the skin, however peptides are smaller therefore able to penetrate and signal the skin. Applying peptides topically to your skin alerts it to produce more collagen because it’ll think that collagen has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. The most realistic expectation we can expect from a product that contains peptides is firmer, smoother and healthier skin but that is if we are diligent and consistent with it. And consistent I was when I used the Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop.
With the peptide talk out of the way, let’s get into the actual product.
Although this is referred to as a serum, it has an incredibly watery texture with zero viscosity and acts more like a first essence. While it is safe and fine to use this in either your morning or night routine, or both, it is recommended that this is used at night due to its ingredients. Since there was no further explanation on why it was better to use it at night, I used it twice a day in both my morning and night routine.
The Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop is just as photogenic as the Midnight Blue Calming Cream. It is also tiny in size, coming with just 20ml of product. The dropper bottle is made of glass which makes this the third glass packaging from Dear, Klairs for me. Although it was easy to see the product inside the bottle at first, it’s gotten harder to with the product sticker covering most of the entire bottle and the expiration date printed vertically.
order of application:
morning: cleanser -> Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop -> toner -> serum -> moisturizer -> sunscreen
night: cleansing oil -> cleanser -> Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop -> toner -> serum -> moisturizer
note: If there are any oils in your routine, make sure to add them after this as to not interfere with the absorption of the serum.
I usually use a little over half a dropper on my entire face and neck. If you’re uncoordinated, work in small amounts because dispensing this is like dispensing water on your face. I release a few drops at a time, pat it in and just repeat the process until I’m done. I tried to be ambitious once and my face was literally crying blue tears.
One of my favorite things about this is how it absorbs instantly. Those with dehydrated oily skin will love this because your skin with just drink it up. I like that it leaves no residue on the surface of my skin and I can layer on whatever products I have planned next without having to worry about them reacting and creating a tackiness.
The serum supplies a slight cooling sensation when I apply it and it feels hydrating at first but disappears shortly after. A number of reviews stated that this helped with calming acne and redness but I didn’t experience any soothing sensations from this. Although Guaiazulene is one of the 15 ingredients in the formulation, I find that this doesn’t have any calming or soothing properties compared to the cream (which also has Guaiazulene). Since this is an anti-aging product, I don’t really care that it doesn’t do things like soothe irritation.
Now, let’s approach the question of whether this is worth $30 a pop. Yes, if you have the budget. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered an anti-aging serum that was this comfortable to use on the skin. They’re usually heavy and super tacky. This thing absorbs like a dream. The consistency is akin to water so it’s tricky if you’re not used to working with products without viscosity. My skin just drinks this up instantly and I love it. And while some said the effectiveness is more apparent when you stop using this, my skin has been looking a lot healthier since I’ve incorporated this into my routine. My favorite part is how this has helped reduce the appearance of my pores. The fine lines and wrinkles are getting help from a number of products so I can’t really credit this serum for any of that since I’m not confident. But overall, my skin is clearer, brighter and the pores are definitely less of an eyesore which I’m just loving.
I have nothing but love for the Midnight Blue Calming Cream and I have to say that love extends to this lovely anti-aging serum. It’s easy to use, works and hey I can layer on the rest of my skincare products comfortably. The only thing is we’re looking at paying $30 for something that’ll last somewhere between a month and possibly a month and a half (2 applications per day).
The good:
- no tackiness, greasiness or residue whatsoever
- unscented
- rapid absorption
- easy to use, allows for easy layering of other products
- cruelty-free, vegan friendly
- visible results with consistent and continued use (clearer, brighter, youthful skin and reduced appearance of pores)
The bad:
- expensive
- packaging makes it difficult to see how much product is left
Rather than “restore your youth”, I think the more realistic approach here is to preserve whatever youth you might have left if you’re like me and using this in your late 30s. If you’re in your 20s and early 30s then you have a higher chance of preventing the fine lines, wrinkles and maintaining/improving skin elasticity. However if you’re like the rest of the crew, dearly grasping onto whatever youth you have left, this will help but it clearly won’t give you your 20s skin back. I still think I have a better shot with it than without it though.
I’ve got a few peptide serums left in my stash so I’ll hold off on purchasing this for the time being but I’m a huge fan of this and see myself getting it in the future.
The Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop is available at Wishtrend for $30.
