TIAM My Signature Red C Serum: A New Favorite!
I have been a regular user of AHAs and BHAs for over two years now, but never have I really stepped into the Vitamin C world, until now. Enter: TIAM My Signature Red C Serum.
Claims: This product features 20% Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, Glutathione, and Niacinamide. The product claims that it will help treat dullness and uneven skintone, while preventing signs of aging by offering free radical fighting antioxidants.
Texture and Functionality: I have been applying this in my AM routine, following my morning cleanse and a light layer of non-hydrating toner. About one dropper full is enough to cover my entire face. The serum is a bit sticky, and leaves my face feeling stiff, and that feeling doesn’t go away until I’ve applied something else on top of it. Immediately after application my skin has a nice glow to it. I wait a minimum of 20 minutes before applying anything else so that the product can work its magic- Vitamin C is considered an active, so wait time between products is essential so that you get the most benefits from the product, while also guaranteeing that you are not overloading your skin too quickly (this would be more true if you were doing acids AND Vitamin C all in one routine).
Effects: After using this for a few weeks (with a 5 day break between use, I went on vacation and forgot to pack this, whoops!) I have seen definite signs of improvement in the appearance and texture of my skin. I was expecting to see signs of lightening/reduction of uneven skintone, and I have, but what I was NOT expecting was how smooth it has made my skin! I often have a few layers of skincare on at any given time, so it’s sometimes hard to gauge the quality of my skin texture, but when my face is totally bare it’s so much smoother than it used to be! I can’t stop touching it! (with clean hands, of course). I was looking through my routine, trying to figure out what might have been behind this change, but this was the only new product in my routine that had enough ‘punch’ behind it to have been the cause!
Cautions: I want to point out that whenever using an active, whether that’s an AHA, BHA, or Vitamin C, always, always, always use sunscreen. Vitamin C, as an active, can increase skin sensitivity (thus, use sunscreen) and can sometimes cause mild irritation in some users. If you’re new to actives, try patch testing this before diving in. Also- Vitamin C is prone to oxidization, which is sped up when exposed to heat and light. Keep your bottle in the fridge to prolong its life!
Final thoughts: I love, love, loved this! I was hoping to like it, but wasn’t expecting to fall in love! When it comes to skincare: layering hydrating products, masking on occasion, using sunscreen- all important, and you’ll likely see benefits from doing all these things, but actives are the real powerhouses of the skincare field. You will see real results quickly, and long term results with continued use. While some actives come with their shares of uncertainty (purging! irritation!), Vitamin C, when offered in a well-balanced, well-made formula, can give a real ‘umph’ to your routine.
This serum is the sister product to the TIAM My Signature C Source, and while I haven’t tested out the Signature C Source (I might just have to!), the company states that the Red C Serum is best for “intensive care for stubborn dark spots and red marks” and “if you want acne relief and to enhance skin barrier to fight acne”. Whereas the Signature C Serum is meant for “if you have oily skin and want to tighten up your skin” and “if you want to lighten overall skin tone and get glowing skin”. Personally, I have combo/oily skin and liked the Red C Source just fine, so I would say that the major difference between the two is if you are dealing with acne and stubborn uneven skintone then the Red C Source is better, but for overall brightening without needing major attention to PIE/PIH then the Signature C Source might be better for you.
