Why this Chanel swimsuit is the fashion obsession of the summer

Models walked the sand-covered catwalk, to the rhythm of rolling waves hitting the makeshift shore, as they showed off the retro-accented Chanel Spring/Summer 2019 collection. The show revealed some of the last pieces imagined by Karl Lagerfeld, who designed the season’s collection in a nod to Coco Chanel’s original designs, complete with an unmistakable contemporary twist. While some considered the collection’s various and creative handbags to be the star pieces, Instagram suggested otherwise. In a summery twist, it was the Chanel swimsuit, seen on the sandy catwalk, that quickly conquered the fashion scene. Designed in black and white, the bathing suit features the emblematic double C logo, and was quickly adopted by some of Instagram’s It-girls. Combined with denims, cardigans, bucket hats, or fanny-packs, the suit can be worn beach-side or in the city, just take your pick.

In two step with the 1990s revival trend that has taken over the fashion scene in the last few seasons, the swimsuit echoes a piece designed by Karl Lagerfeld almost 20 years ago. As seen during the Spring-summer 1994 Chanel show, a classic one-piece black swimsuit underwent a couture transformation thanks to the help of the double C logo, accessorized with a bag worn at the waist. In all, the swimsuit is a must-have summer accessory, seen worn by Gisele Bündchen for the June/July 2019 issue of Vogue Paris, styled by Emmanuelle Alt, and shot by Mikael Jansson.
