Balenciaga Drops Out of Lyst’s Top 10 Hottest Brands Ranking

It’s #11, but still.

Lyst just released its latest Index report, which ranks the hottest fashion brands quarterly, using data compiled from over 200 million shoppers (user searches, product views, sales, social media mentions) to determine the names and products that have dominated the preceding three months. And for Q4 — October to December 2022 — there were some significant shifts in the rankings from the previous period, plus some expected and unexpected new entries.

Stealing the number-one spot from Gucci, Prada took the cake as the world’s hottest brand at the end of 2022, with searches up 37% in Q4. Gucci’s still doing well, landing in the #2 spot, followed by Moncler (up 14 spots), Miu Miu and Valentino (most of which experienced upwards movement). Rounding out the top 10 are Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Dior, Dolce & Gabanna and Saint Laurent.

In not-so-surprising news, Balenciaga dropped seven spots, leaving it out of the top 10, where it’s sat comfortably since the Lyst Index’s inception. This follows a string of controversies over the past few months, including the two infamous campaigns from November, which ignited an uproar that traveled across the internet and led to apologies from the brand and its designer, Demna (which have seemingly failed to quell the storm). It’s a big drop for the brand, which held fourth place in Q3, its Swift oval glasses listed among the top 10 hottest items during that period.

Speaking of products, Saint Laurent’s Icare bag reigned as the number-one hottest item in Q4, — an indication that big bags are definitely having a moment. Other stand-outs include Doc Marten’s Leonore Chelsea boots (thanks to the resurgence of ’90s grunge) and Miu Miu’s logo-satin briefs (which have been spotted on a plethora of buzzy celebrities, leading to a 96% increase in searches this quarter).

As fashion month nears, there will certainly be new additions to the Lyst Index come Q1 2023. In the meantime, see the full Q4 2022 rankings, below.
