Chanel | Holiday 2018 N°5 Eau de Parfum Red Edition: Review
Chanel Holiday 2018 | Chanel N°5 Eau de Parfum Red Edition
The Bottle:
For the first and last time (or so Chanel claims), the iconic Chanel N°5 bottle is dressed from head to toe in a dark red veil. The translucent red tint gives the perfume a mysterious touch and I love that the cabochon cap is also made of glass for an extra touch of luxury. This is without a doubt a must-have collector’s piece but even for those that don’t already own the original, it still makes for a stunning present.
The Scent:
Believe it or not, this is my first time trying Chanel N°5 (gasp, I know). The eau de parfum was created in 1986 and was supposedly an interpretation of the original 1921 parfum. As Chanel N°5 is such an iconic scent, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. The fragrance has a unique soapy quality and I mean it in the best way possible. The most prominent component is the aldehydes, a combination of organic compounds that provide a sweet soapy smell. As the initial soapy punch mellows, the scent turns a bit more powdery, giving way to the warm sandalwood and vanilla. The citrus top notes are undetectable to my nose and although the floral accord is always present, it never really takes center stage. I’ve heard some people describe Chanel N°5 as old-fashioned or grandma-like but I honestly quite like it. There’s something very comforting and alluring about the sweet soapiness that I have not yet experienced with any other fragrances before. I don’t think this is a scent for everyone but if you’ve not tried it before, I definitely urge you to do so and form your own opinions.
Top Notes: Aldehydes, Neroli, Ylang-Ylang, Peach, Bergamot
Heart Notes: Jasmine, Lily-of-the-Valley, Iris, and Rose
Base Notes: Sandalwood, Vetiver, Moss, Patchouli, Vanilla
