Originally launched in 2011 as a bridge between a matte & luminous finish, Rouge Allure Velvet has been reinvented in 2023 with twenty shades encompassing the red spectrum. In fact, the colour red has great significance for the House, as this was the shade Gabrielle Chanel believed expressed the true power of a woman. Personally, nothing says “I’m owning it” quite as effectively as a red lipstick, wouldn’t you agree?

Rouge Allure Velvet 2023 (CAN $52.00/each) | Housed in the brand’s signature black lacquered case, the lipstick clicks open by depressing the logo on top. The 20 shades are meant to be representative of the many facets of red — from nude, pink, true red, deep berry, and therefore suitable to a broad range of complexions and tastes. Having created her first red lipstick in 1924, Mademoiselle was a pioneer where female emancipation is concerned and even created a pocket in her famous handbag to hold this important accessory. Fast forward to 2023, and these 20 key shades (4 of which are shown here) embody this vision of a plural yet singular hue. The formula contains ultra-fine pigments for intense and long wearing colour, pearly pigments for an unprecedented luminous quality, as well as castor oil and shea butter for soothing and moisturizing properties. Providing full opacity with the first swipe, the texture is lush and buttery smooth, gliding effortlessly along the lips without tugging or pulling, and what’s more, doesn’t stray or bleed into surrounding lip lines either. The finish comes to a true velvet sheen and while emollient in nature, staying power is amazingly great (in particular with the darker shades).

If there’s one thing CHANEL is the undisputed master of as far as beauty is concerned, then red lipstick has to definitely be it. That said, I’m having an absolute moment with the hot pink Intense shade and have a feeling it’s going to be my go-to this year. Regardless of which colour speaks to you the most, the texture and unrivalled quality — not to mention how comfortable these are to wear — makes these lipsticks an excellent investment in your beauty wardrobe and well worth your time to check them out.
