Dawn Staley outfits, ranked: South Carolina coach’s sideline fashion, from iconic jacket to Cheyney State throwback jersey
From Broad Street to Broadway, Dawn Staley knows how to make a statement.
The South Carolina coach is a jack of all trades — all-time great tactician, philanthropist, mogul and fashionista.
In fact, it’s that fashion sense that has made Staley an icon on and off the court.
She makes the sideline her catwalk, sporting the finest cloths while leading her team to decisive victories. It’s all very cool, yet another stitch in the billowing quilt that is her coaching career.

1. An ode to Cheyney State, Yolanda Laney

Staley isn’t just a coach, she’s also a basketball historian, an astute observer of the game’s past. As one of precious few Black coaches in college sports, Staley stands on the shoulders of those who came before her. And few figures loom as large as Yolanda Laney
You may know Laney for her tenure at Virginia. That’s not where she made her name, though. The Basketball Hall of Famer spearheaded HBCU Cheyney State’s Final Four run in 1982, an achievement right up there with Texas Western’s victory over an all-white Kentucky team in the 1966 men’s title game.
Staley paid homage to Laney and the Wolves earlier in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, donning her former coach’s warmup shirt when South Carolina beat HBCU Norfolk State on March 17.
It’s clean, retro and shows love for one of the sport’s greatest OGs. 10/10.
2. Temple-to-Temple connection
Greatness honors greatness.

Staley earned her coaching stripes at Temple, following in the footsteps of another Philly basketball icon, former men’s basketball coach John Chaney. In addition to his basketball acumen, Chaney was known for, among other things, rocking a loose black tie with dress shirt and slacks.
Chaney died in January 2021. Staley paid tribute to the fellow Hall of Famer with this sleek number, a simple but poignant reminder of the late icon.
3. Dawn x Louis Vuitton

It’s difficult to decide quite what Louis V fit suits Staley the best. There was the iconic forest-green jacket she was draped in as South Carolina captured the national championship last year, an outfit that screamed “I’m built for this.”

But that wasn’t all for Staley. She swapped the green for all black this year, prowling the sidelines in another LV-littered sweatsuit as the Gamecocks breezed past Maryland to secure their spot in the Final Four.
4. Balenci, Balenci, Balenci
Staley isn’t averse to high-quality brands. In addition to Louis, she’s also dabbled in the popping stylings of Balenciaga fashion wear. Here she is pairing a milky-white fitted blazer with a simple white tee and Balenci’ jeans. Her versatility is a sight to behold.
5. Run Dawn-MC
As with many people of a certain generation, Staley has a great appreciation for the art of the tracksuit. In an ensemble eerily reminiscent of the stylings of Rev Run, DMC and Grandmaster Jay (minus the shell-toed Adidas, of course), Staley evokes memories of a time past, one defined by b-boys and breakdance. All she needs now is a Kangol.
6. Stars, Stripes…and Style

When she’s not organizing her troops at Colonial Life Arena, Staley is, among other things, the head coach of the U.S. women’s basketball team. Don’t let that fool you into thinking her drip doesn’t travel abroad.

7. Fly, Eagles Fly

Staley is one fly person. In fact, some would say it’s a way of life for the Philly-born and bred legend. She saluted her city — and its beloved football team — ahead of Super Bowl 57, donning the colors of another Black Broad Street icon: former Eagles QB Randall Cunningham. If you didn’t know which NFL team she was repping, now you do.

Before Staley was a coach, she was a trailblazing player. She shined at Virginia, earning All-America honors and capturing a national championships during her time in Charlottesville. Then, she went to Charlotte, starring for the Sting — one of the WNBA’s original eight teams.
Suffice to say, the Queen City is one of Staley’s homes away from home. She highlighted that at the 2019 NBA All-Star Game — held in Charlotte — pulling up courtside with a Charlotte Sting sweatshirt and Sting/Hornets-themed Jordan 1’s.
9. The People’s Elbow . . . Patches

Staley is nothing if not a trendsetter. She rocks what she wants, when she wants. Case in point: check out the fit she sported while capturing her 500th win. Come for the funky stripes and elbow patches, stay for the T-shirt emblazoned with names of iconic Black coaches on it. A student of the game, in every sense of the word.
