EDID4001 – Quality English Teaching – University of Oslo

Course content

The course gives you insight into quality teaching in English as a school subject in Norway. Based on observations of English lessons in Norwegian secondary schools, we discuss elements of quality teaching in English.

You will get the opportunity to explore how teachers teach a variety of topics within the English school subject, and how classroom practices align with research in English didactics. Collective workshops and individual study will form a basis from which you can develop your practice-based and research-informed English teacher professionalism.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Admission to the specialisation in English didactics is required.

Teaching

The course offers 28 hours of teaching during the semester. Student activities include data analysis workshops and oral presentations. Course reading is set to approximately 650 pages. Student work is supervised throughout the course.

Students are expected to meet prepared for teaching activities, and take responsibility for individual study of course reading. Participation in group discussions is a condition for acquiring the relevant competence to complete the course.

Compulsory components

• Data analysis of a recorded English lesson (audio or video)
• An oral presentation of a classroom observation from an English lesson (filmed or live) 
• To provide feedback to an assigned student paper and/or presentation

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Students have to be enrolled for the course to attend classes.

Examination

The exam is an individual student lecture (”prøveforelesning”) on a chosen topic of classroom observation. The lecture includes presentation of results from data analysis, as well as relevant literature from the course reading. The lecture is held to the course teacher and other students, but will also be open to an external audience.

The three obligatory assignments need to be passed to be able to perform the student lecture for the exam.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
