Biography
Obituary:[1]
FRANCIS A. SHIELDS A resident of Palm Beach, FL, died on Friday, April 25, 2003, after a protracted illness.
Born in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Francis Xavier Shields, the professional tennis player, and the late Princess Marina Torlonia of Rome, Italy.
Mr. Shields was a graduate of Buckley School, St. Paul’s School and the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the captain of the heavyweight crew team that rowed at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1962. In 1980 he founded Power Ten New York, an organization dedicated to supporting the sport of rowing. He was an avid hunter and fisherman spending as much time as possible at “Canoe Creek”, his ranch in western Florida and at “Camp Harmony”, a fishing camp in New Brunswick, Canada. He was a member of The Racquet and Tennis Club, The Brook, Piping Rock Club and The Bath and Tennis Club.
He started his career on Wall Street working for Loeb Rhoades, after which he moved into sales and marketing for Revlon, Estee Lauder and Handy Associates, an executive search firm in New York City.
In 1989 he and his family moved to Palm Beach, where he formed his own real estate firm, Frank Shields Associates. He lived life to the fullest, fought valiantly with dignity and courage and was taken too early. He is loved by many and will be missed and never forgotten. A private family service will be held at a later date.
