Water / Aqua / Eau

It dilutes the ingredients, dissolves them, makes them more stable and brings them closer together. This enables the ingredients to react with each other and create the product. It helps the functional ingredients to spread. It also improves the overall texture of the product (texture enhancer).

Glycerin

It is a humectant. Humectants are like sponges. They bind themselves to water. When applied on the skin surface, they draw water either from the atmosphere or from the deeper layers of skin to the top layer of the skin. Humectants fill up the space between cells on top layer of skin. By filling up the space in-between cells, they keep the cells firm and also strengthen the skin barrier function of skin (a strong barrier reduces water loss through evaporation from skin and protects skin from attacks by external irritants). Keeps skin hydrated, plump and firm.

Propanediol

Dilutes the ingredients, dissolves them, makes them more stable and brings them closer together. This enables the ingredients to react with each other and create the product. Also a humectant. Humectants are like sponges. They bind themselves to water. When applied on the skin surface, they draw water either from the atmosphere or from the deeper layers of skin to the top layer of the skin. Keeps skin hydrated, plump and firm. Texture enhancer for the product. Improves efficiency of other preservatives (preservative booster).

Squalane

Softens and smoothens skin (emollient). It is present in our skin’s sebum in a slightly different version. Sebum forms a thin layer on skin’s surface and helps skin in its barrier function (the barrier prevents water loss and fights external aggressors). Skin recognises squalane as one of its own and allows it to permeate quickly. Feels light on skin.

1,2-Hexanediol

Preservative. Preservatives prevent harmful microbial growth in the product. These harmful microbes can cause skin infections. Preservatives prolong the shelf life of the product. Also attracts/binds itself to water
(humectant). By attracting water it hydrates and plumps up skin.

Butylene Glycol

Good type of alcohol in skincare. Attracts water – binds itself to water (humectant). When applied on the skin surface, it draws water either from the atmosphere or the deeper layers of skin to the top layer of the skin. Keeps skin hydrated, plump and firm. Helps in dissolving other ingredients (solvent). Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better. Also a penetration enhancer (help other ingredients in your product penetrate better into deeper layers of skin).

Niacinamide

Strengthens skin barrier by increasing synthesis of ceramides (ceramides is the key component of skin barrier). Skin barrier acts as a shield on the top layer of skin. Strong barrier locks-in moisture (hydration) and fights the damage caused to skin by external aggresors (antioxidant). Helps in synthesis of collagen and glycosaminoglycan (reduces fine lines and increases suppleness). Brightens skin. Helps with fixing hyperpigmentation (dark patches of skin).
