Newcastle United’s Premier League fixture at Liverpool is about to get even tougher – with Eddie Howe set to be without several key players.

The Magpies head to Anfield, a ground they haven’t won on since 1994. And if they are to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign, they’ll have to do it the hard way.

Already missing are Jonjo Shelvey, Emil Krafth and Callum Wilson. Key duo Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin are likely to join that list, with both players an injury doubt.

Newcastle, at the time of writing, are yet to learn if record signing Alexander Isak has obtained a work permit and therefore be available for tonight’s clash.

But whatever the outcome, Howe believes United are better positioned than the last time they visited Anfield, which ended in a 3-1 loss last December.

Howe said: “I certainly think we’re in a stronger place than the game against Liverpool at Anfield, when we were in a difficult position at that moment.

“We were just trying to stay in the game for as long as we could. I thought we performed well on the day but their quality won them the game.

“I think we’re in a stronger place. The injuries are a concern to us, but I think we’re unbeaten, the players are playing in a style of football and way of playing that I believe they’ve got confidence in.

“We will be extremely tested in this game, it will be a really good examination of us, but I see no reason why we shouldn’t go there and give another good account of ourselves and play without fear.”
