Reddit – Dive into anything

Hi.

By default, the YouTube player sets the quality to “auto”. However, this “auto” quality seems to be synonymous with 360p – even when fullscreening the video, the quality remains at 360p. Is this really how the “auto” quality feature is supposed to work? I mean, my internet connection has no problem whatsoever streaming 1080p videos, so why should “auto” mean 360p?

Another thing, even when I go to settings -> quality and pick the highest resolution, the quality remains unchanged. Only when I jump to an unloaded part of the video and back again does it actually give me the beautiful HD. Alternatively, I can wait until it decides to give me HD quality by itself, that is, after half the video is played. Am I missing something here? Am I somehow using the quality picker wrong? Or is YouTube simply a completely useless piece of shit?

Also, I can’t seem to find the option to change the quality the player defaults to?

I know there are plugins to remedy some (or all) of these issues, but where’s the official, plugin-less solution?
