Reddit – Dive into anything
I just saw someone selling a Burberry trenchcoat saying it must be authentic because it’s vintage, as if people didn’t make fakes more than 20 years ago.
Pre-1998/9*, Burberry went by “Burberrys” and tags would say “Burberrys” “Burberrys Made in England” “Burberrys London Paris New York” and “Burberrys of London” depending on decade and if the item was sold/manufactured in England or overseas.
Post-1998/9, they changed their name to simply “Burberry” and tags will say “Burberry London”.
If you see a tag saying “Burberry of London” with no s, it is definitely fake. If it says “Burberry London” and it’s real, there’s only a 2 year threshold to call it vintage (1998-1999).
Here’s a helpful timeline of logos but it doesn’t have every possibly tag that I’ve seen. There are lots of forum posts on eBay and listings on Grailed and Poshmark that can also help you identify authenticity.

as a caveat, in very early days, like in the 19th century, the company started out as Burberry but the owner changed the name to Burberrys as customers would call it that. So the name has actually changed from Burberry > Burberrys > Burberry.
EDIT: Some more help with dating – if the inner tag has single apostrophes i.e. ‘Burberrys’, then it is pre-1990 as they got rid of the ‘ ‘ sometime in the late 80s.
