Physician Engagement in Quality and Safety is IHQI’s six-hour course for residents, fellows and faculty that highlights safety and quality challenges in healthcare and physicians’ role as leaders in improvement. Contact the IHQI Program Coordinator for additional information.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) offers IHI Open School, online courses that teach the foundations of improvement, safety, system design and leadership. IHQI strongly recommends IHI’s Open School courses as they offer exceptional content and are very well-produced.

IHI Open School is free to faculty, residents and students. When you create an account, type in, “UNC School of Medicine – Chapel Hill, NC” for the organization. If you are faculty, select “Teacher/Professor” as your primary role on the demographic information page. You should then be able to access the full catalog of courses. Complete instructions for accessing IHI Open School for free are explained by IHI. For additional questions, please contact the IHQI Program Coordinator.

At UNC Health, Lean Six Sigma training is provided by the department of Operational Efficiency (OE). OE offers training in Yellow Belt, Blue Belt, Purple Belt and Kaizen Coach. UNC employees can access OE’s SharePoint Site for more information, or you can email [email protected].

UNC is launching a graduate certificate in Improvement Science & Implementation in Spring 2023.

The three-course, nine credit-hour program adopts a flipped classroom model, with asynchronous lectures, readings, podcasts, and video, blended with in-person weekend project-based learning. The courses are:

  • Change Leadership & System Improvement
  • Design Thinking for the Public Good
  • Implementation and Equity

The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health offers courses in healthcare quality improvement from the Departments of Health Policy and Management and Public Health Leadership. Provided is a list of courses and syllabi.

The Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Boston, MA, with a mission to make things better through lean thinking and practice. LEI develops hypotheses about lean thinking and experiments to see which approaches work best in the real world. LEI then writes up and teaches what they discover, providing new methods for organizational transformation. LEI offers several value streams: Lean Education, Lean Learning Materials, Co-Learning Partnerships, the Lean Summit conferences and the LEI website.

The Intermountain Healthcare Delivery Institute, located in Murray, Utah, helps healthcare professionals develop quality improvement tools for their organizations. Intermountain Healthcare’s Advanced Training Programs are designed to help fill the urgent need to integrate state-of-the-art clinical quality techniques into the health services infrastructure. The Intermountain Healthcare Delivery Institute has trained thousands of executive and physician leaders from across the nation and around the world, including several from UNC Health Care.

The James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence is part of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Anderson Center Leadership Academy focuses on building improvement capability both at Cincinnati Children’s and outside their medical center.
