Volumio vs Moode Audio
« on: September 06, 2021, 08:58:02 PM »
A couple of years ago I added a Raspberry Pi-based streamer to my setup. I used Volumio for more than a year and I can’t recommend it at all.
I can’t really pinpoint the single biggest issue I had with Volumio, it was definitely a case of “death by a thousand paper cuts”. I experienced all kinds of annoying bugs, such as:
– Spotify renderer suddenly going dark and requiring a reboot
– No audio output at all until reboot
– Radio stations refusing to start until reboot
– Very slow boot times, at least on a Raspberry Pi 3
– Occasionally forgetting my network folders
– I could never get AirPlay to work reliably with my wide assortment of Apple devices
It also managed to corrupt itself twice in about a year.
Last week I finally decided that enough is enough and installed Moode Audio. And guess what? It boots up at least 5 times faster than Volumio. AirPlay works perfectly. Spotify renderer works perfectly. Online radio works perfectly. The interface was a bit confusing initially but I got used to it in about a day. I can’t yet comment on long term reliability but my initial impressions are very good. I will never go back to Volumio.

I bought the Sparky setup from Allo. I have only got access to Volumio. Never had any of your issues. That’s a shame. Hope Moode works better for you.

The biggest advantage of moode is a possibility to upgrade OS without breaking things.
As for Volumio, it supports all major streaming services (to some extend). I use it for
AirPlay works pretty well in both Volumio and Moode for me, dunno what is wrong with your installation. But yes, may be because I am not using it too often.

Had my first attempt at using Volumio some years ago (before Raspberry Pi 3 had been released) and found it frustrating. Lots of glitches, similar to what you describe. In the end I installed Retro Pie and used my Raspberry Pi 2 for retro gaming instead. That was fun for a while but the Raspberry sat unused more and more until I forgot about it.
Then, about a year ago, I reinstalled Volumio and it has worked flawlessly. I don’t use Apple devices, so can’t comment on Airplay. But Spotify Connect, radio, local files (stored on a NAS) – it all works. And that’s on an old Raspberry Pi 2. I’ll probably get a new one as USB audio is supposed to be improved on the latest models, but I’m happy with the Volumio user experience.
My son uses it too. He has a RP3 connected over wifi (my RP2 lacks wifi, so wired connection it is). I think he only uses Spotify Connect, but it works without issues.

I use both; MoOde in a HiFiberry based system and Volumio in an IQaudIO based system. Neither are currently the latest versions. I definitely prefer the MoOde UI and after power cuts I have to unplug and replug Volumio, but not MoOde. I don’t know whether this is down to the software or the hardware. With regular power cuts probably becoming more likely as we move back to the 1970s, I should probably investigate further.

I use Volumio and my main source is Qobuz. Volumio occasionally requires a reboot but it is mostly reliable. I did try Moode but couldn’t find a simple way to connect to Qobuz, it seems you need to plug in another app to make it connect but maybe someone knows better.

I use a number of Raspberry Pi players either USB out or with Digihats every one is connected to my Logitech Media Server which runs on a Pi 4 8GB as a stand alone server . Moodeaudio is by far the best sounding and quickest player I have used and has the advantage that it is free .
