The civil marriage took place at the Beurs van Berlage, officiated by the Mayor of Amsterdam, followed by the religious ceremony in the Nieuwe Kerk on the Dam Square in Amsterdam, officiated by Minister Emeritus of the Kloosterkerk in The Hague. Queen Maxima’s parents couldn’t attend the wedding, due to her father’s role as a controversial cabinet minister during the Argentinian National Reorganization Process, and her mother choosing not to attend without her husband. In their honour, a beautiful Argentine Tango by Piazzolla was played.
After the religious ceremony, The Prince of Orange and the new Princess Máxima rode through Amsterdam in the Golden Carriage, before returning to the Royal Palace, where they appeared on the balcony and kissed several times to the thundering cheers of the crowd assembled on the Dam Square.
