What does a Quality Assurance Officer do?

A QA Officer (or QA Manager GMP) is involved in GxP areas – Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Distribution Practice (GDP) or Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) in the manufacturing of pharma products. You have a vital role within Quality Assurance in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Working in the GMP area there is close collaboration with the supply chain to ensure the required quality standards are being met in the supplies and products. In all three areas, the QA Officer ensures that the relevant quality systems are updated with all required information and actions on a timely basis.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Quality Assurance Officer?

Your role as a Quality Assurance Officer involves a number of tasks such as batch review, approval of incoming raw material requests and subsequent release, change control and validation-related activities.

In detail, some of the Quality Assurance Officer responsibilities may include the following:

  • reviewing records and change requests on completeness, consistency, relevance and clarity;
  • providing advice to requesting departments regarding GMP matters and GMP compliance;
  • reviewing documentation relating to raw materials and the release of raw materials;
  • reviewing and preparing batch release documentation;
  • reviewing and approval of QA-controlled documentation (such as SOPs, batch records, working instructions);
  • support for the development of appropriate Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPAs) and continuous improvement activities.

What education and skills do you need as a Quality Assurance Officer?

To become a QA Officer you will need a BSc or MSc in biopharmaceutical or biomedical science, chemistry, pharmacy or another relevant Life Science degree. As well as this, a number of years working in the pharmaceutical or food industry is preferred, and up-to-date knowledge of GMP regulations is an advantage.
Personal skills and attributes that you need to bring to the role include:

  • good communication skills in Dutch and English;
  • being critical and highly accurate;
  • able to work alone as well as being a team player when required.

What salary can you expect as a Quality Assurance  Officer?

The salary of a QA Officer depends on experience and the nature of the role being offered. In the Netherlands, it varies between €30.000,- and €50.000,- per annum for full-time positions.
